Default 1989 bravo one compatibilty

I have a twin set up 1989 formula with bravo ones...

one outdrive is broken...stripped out the gears in the upper...I want to try to find a rebuild or a used one...so first off if anyone has one in working order....idk which giears I have so I need to check that...but my main question is what years are compatible with my transoms...some newer ones look a little different...a little offset and im worried about boat working correctly...before I purchase one from somewhere I need to make sure its going to work....thanks guys
I want to be out there asap

Do you have a lube reservoir? That is a significant difference from newer drives most likely. Also the lower units are short and stubby on 88 and 89 bravos. I'm pretty sure I have a 1989 complete outdrive that I listed in this add in the link below some years ago.

Yes I do. But I just went to see if it had the valve for the drive reservoir provision and it does not. Funny because this drive came off a 1989 formula just like yours. Anyway I do have the other upper pictured with that complete drive which has the reservoir valve. The new uppers also had a revision to how the upper gears were oiled. In new drives there is a hole that goes from the lower through to the upper to provide supplemental oiling. You lower most likely won't have that hole and you would need to plug the transfer hole in the upper. Both of my drives on my boat have either the upper or lower transfer holes plugged and I don't blow drives, so I know that works fine. So that could be an option for you. If you were to get just an upper you should know that your lower is full of metal and needs to be completely torn down and cleaned out before running again or boom.

The other option could be to go with my 1989 bravo complete and just not use the reservoir provision on your boat. I don't have them on my boat.

formula 18, yes any bravo will fit your helmet. The major differences are the items I mentioned, transfer hole, oil reservoir provision and stubby lower gearcase on the lower on older bravos. If you were so inclined I could mate my 1989 lower with my newer upper and block the transfer hole for you to make it plug and play, for the price of the current complete 1989 outdrive.

Port Monster, click on the link to the original ad I had on the drives and the price (1k) is there. Also the serial number on the newer drive is in the last post. Both uppers are 1.5:1.
