Default Need some pointers on how to replace the upper on one of my TRS

So I broke my first TRS drive. I broke the top gear.

I found an entire replacement upper half. Is it a big job to separate the halves and replace the old upper with the new upper? I know I will have to drain and flush the sections but what's involved in actually replacing the upper half? Never broke one open!

Any pointers?

Thanks
Jim

No special tools needed to split the upper from lower but you do need to shim the upper to the lower (shims under the lower verticle shaft bearing race between the two. I've got the manual if you are still in town Jim.

Thanks Kurt! I have a clymer manual and I saw the preload called out in the manual but I don't understand the purpose. It looks like from the manual cross sections that the upper and lower halves shafts are connected with a slip joint so what's the purpose of the shims on the lower vertical shaft? Is it because the timken in the lower housing mates up with the race in the top section. The cross sections in the manual are not that detailed!

Yeah, you've got it. The race for the lower vert shaft tapered bearing is located in the upper housing. Pre-load is done with shims. I've got some of them left over from TRS days, you're welcome to them. I'd also pull the prop bearing carrier and flush out the debris. -When a TRS blows, it semds debris everyehrre very quickly as the coupler between the upper and lower also is an oil pump (spiral wound around it sending oil from lower to upper)

Removing the prop bearing carrier requires a special tool doesn't it?
