Mid 90s Bravo 1 Upper Repair or Rebuild
#1
We’ve got a 97 upper that the gears let go in and a 95 upper with a cracked case. Would like to have a spare upper and need to know what is feasible.
The cracked case was caused by a log strike and it is assumed that the internals are OK since the boat made it home without issue running 70+mph. Can the case be welded with the drive still assembled?
The alternative may be to transfer the good parts to the case with the broken gears. What would it cost? and who to send it to for the work?
Our marina does not rebuild drives nor do they recommend it…

Pat,
Both drives would have the thin floored gears, if they are original. I would not recommend welding the case. Depending on where the crack is, the welding process warps things out of shape. A competent welder could repair it possibly, but everything would need to be measured to make sure nothing warped.
The gears in the 95 will fit in the 97. Depending on the damage to the case on the 97, swapping internals is a possibility. If the gears broke and wedged against something it could have warped the tower in the case. The tower alignment would need to be checked, as well as the floor of the case. A steel tower can be installed but a new thick floored gear set would be needed with the tower I use. The floor can be machined to make it parallel to the top of the case also.
Until both are looked at or some pictures posted, it is hard to determine what the best route is.
Hope that helps.

Thank you for the reply Dick. I get some pictures to post.
The 95 was a spare that sat around for years collecting dust prior to this season when the 97 broke. We're not likely going to spend the $$ to do a rebuild that involves remanufacture of the case and new gears.
It is probably better to pass these parts onto someone that may be able to use them. Would you have a ball park value? $0.20 per pound?
Thank you again.
