Default cavation plate anode

Are you supposed to use the front cavation plate anode {mag.} with Mercathode?

Mine have both. Just the way it came new.

If your boat doesn't stay in the water, really don't need anything. If it does stay in, best to use a silver/silver-chloride (Ag/AgCl) reference electrode to check the protection if you really want to be sure. With that said, over protection, as well as under protection, is to be avoided too.
