Dont know if you found the noise yet but the noise you described sounds like an old blower,Ive never heard a drive,gimbal bearing,u-joints,or coupler make that noise,but likely have to hear it to be any help.

the old blower motor is a posability,i know a guy who had that problem,a large boat repair place[i wont say who]told him the bearings were shot in one of his transmissions,he asked me to listen to it,ended up being the bearing in his bilge blower motor.
