I've been debating what to run in my 28' Velocity. It's a pad bottom boat, BBC 1000+ hp. I've replaced my transom, re-cut the hole and its perfect for a Imco SC w/-2 lower. I might need to add a 1/4" spacer but its in the ballpark. My question is I've been debating if I should just run? Regardless of drive I plan of sending the lower to WCM for blueprinting. I've just sold my complete drive so I'm starting over fresh either way.
OPTION 1 : SCX upper with a -2 SC lower. It won't change my x-dimension at all and alot of people seem to run well with that setup.
OPTION 2 : Full SCX upper and lower, I've heard of guys loosing some top speed. I don;t know if that's because of the X dimension change and they still needed to add spacing or what.
OPTION 4 : SCX4, Since it's a pad bottom boat, I'm not sure how well this drive would work, it's -4 inches so I would defiantly have to add a 2" or 3" spacer to get my X dimension where it needs to be. Yup props are 5500.00 but doesn't BBlades have a test program so I can try a few before I buy one?
I've heard of guys running 113 with an SC drive and switch over to a SCX or SCX4 and you never hear where they went from there. Any insight would be appreciated..

The scx upper and lower are worth the gain in strength. Plus the scx lower has been updated so there's not going to be much info out yet on how it runs. Better I would assume.
The Scx-4 is not your best choice.....if you want to spin offshore style props go with an Arneson.

I'm thinking a SCX upper and lower would be a good way to go if not an SCX upper and SC lower. Since a Velocity runs at speed on the pad, I've never seen surface drives / Arneson's perform on Velocity's at all.
Has WCM been able to get the SCX lowers to perform as well as the standard SC lowers yet ?
Has anyone picked up any speed running a #6 prop vs a mercury prop on the SCX lower ?
I'm curious what a SCX lower w/ #6 prop would do with a pad v-hull.
I have a pretty good idea a SCX upper and SC lower would be minimal speed loss.

Why would a #6 "offshore" prop work well on a SCX "pretend" surface drive or a scx-4 imitation surface drive but the Arneson which spins the same prop more efficiently through a stronger unit not work?
Full SCX with The new lower if you want maintence free boating
SCX upper SC lower to gain Evey last mph but need to REFRESH every season so you catch it before the crappy merc xr gears that are still mounted in the lower come apart and destroy your beautiful upper.....

I spoke with WCM today about choosing a SCX upper w/SC lower or a full SCX drive. They seem to have blueprinted quite a few SCX lowers at this point and they have seen a rule of thumb of speed loss of 3-6 MPH going to an SCX lower from an SC lower. With blueprinting they can reclaim the lost mph on the SCX lower though.

I talked to Fred at IMCO around Christmas regarding the SCX old style lower vs. the 1300 vs. the 1400. I was curious about how the 1400 ran vs the original bullet.
He suggests the 1400 was designed specifically to help cat hulls - they needed the longer wetted length skeg to settle the transom down at higher speeds. He also said that they still make and sell the original bullet SCX because it remains well suited for all hulls. He personally tested the 1400 vs. the original SCX lower bullet back to back and didn't have any difference in results.
He acknowledged that it is common to lose 2-4 mph, but blueprinting gets some or most of that back, typically. In my case, I was always looking for the reliability anyway and though I lost a couple mph in speed, my problems from having SC lowers (that still use Mercury sourced XR lower gears) were over.
I asked him point blank if I had anything to gain swapping cases to the 1400 and he told me to save my money - no change on a V-hull. That's why they still sell the SCX standard bullet and aren't pushing the 1400 like it's the next big thing. He also said a blueprinted original SCX lower vs a blueprinted SCX 1400 lower should give the same type of results on a v-hull.
This is all I have from my notes from my conversation... but given that I already own SCX drives, he was and has always been very helpful (same with Dave). He definitely wasn't trying to get me to buy more things, or be his guinea pig (since he already knew the results from a similar hull). I have nothing but good things to say about the SCX as a whole.
I hope that helps!
