Bravo x drive, black/burnt oil? Pics.
Wile winterizing & changing the drive, (Bravo 1 X, no drive showers), gear oil on a Good friends boat (30 outlaw), I noticed the port oil was black!, smelt fine but I have never seen this,. Is it burnt? Normally it comes back out the same color I put in witch is bule/green. All oil is Merc HP grear lube. Also the port drive drain plug have a couple more metal shavings on it vs the starboard drive. Boat/engines/drives have 304 / 305 hrs on it. (496 HO engines)
Also the shifter for that drive is easy to move forward and backwards, compaired to starboard witch is firm but not hard. Starboard side I would say is normal. I pulled the shifter assy. to check it out at the helm, and there is no play, cable moves with the shifter fine.
Is it normal ware?
Please advise, good or bad
Thank you

And yes the reomte drains for the engine oil threw the plug is awesome. Plll the plugs and watch the 18 qts drain wile having a beer.

That is one hairy magnet. Plus there appears to be a good sized chunk of metal at 8 o'clock. I'm thinking a bearing is going South in the port upper.

Much more cost effective to rebuild now versus replacing units later on. Port takes more of beating due to the direction of the internal rotation of the parts when spinning props out, it made sense when it was explained to me when I blew the crap out of my port drive which required a full replacement. I'm having starboard rebuilt over the winter to delay more Bravo Blues.

Rebuild it. Once the oil only runs a short time and comes out like that its time for rebuild. Its a combination of getting hot and probably bearing or clutch issues.
It sounds crazy but buy a new X or a good used X. Keep the spare in your shop of choice and rebuild then keep swapping them out... That way you are doing rebuilds for clutches, bearings and small stuff rather than massive complete overhauls from blowing them up. Or maybe I am just a hoarder....
Heck.... I have a complete bravo X/XR museum between my garage and my local drive shop guy.

What is the cost to rebuild a drive? Is a bravo 1 the same cost as bravo x? How many hours can you get before a rebuild is needed? If mech inclined, can a rebuild be done your self?
