Drain the gear oil in a very clean pan - then stick a magnet pick up tool in the drained oil to see what you get on the magnet. You can also pour the used gear oil thru a very fine filter or a womens stocking and see what has settled in the filter / stocking.
Next after the gear oil is drain completely the best thing you can do here is pressure test the outdrive and see if holds to Merc's spec. If your air pressure holds in the outdrive turn the propshaft fwd and rev with a wrench as fast as you by hand to see if pressure still holds. Also I would check the propshaft for straightness using a dial indicator tool. Next I would pull the top cap off and look for scoring, discolorations, wear, or metal. |
