Drain the gear oil in a very clean pan - then stick a magnet pick up tool in the drained oil to see what you get on the magnet. You can also pour the used gear oil thru a very fine filter or a womens stocking and see what has settled in the filter / stocking.

Next after the gear oil is drain completely the best thing you can do here is pressure test the outdrive and see if holds to Merc's spec. If your air pressure holds in the outdrive turn the propshaft fwd and rev with a wrench as fast as you by hand to see if pressure still holds.

Also I would check the propshaft for straightness using a dial indicator tool. Next I would pull the top cap off and look for scoring, discolorations, wear, or metal.

Personally I would part it

What marina said that? Boat was at his house so I just took the chance on it. There nothing to part out really. I just picked up the entire cockpit upholstery from a guy in Venice, FL. Bolsters rear seats and hatch. I'm ready to pull and rebuild engines if needed. Rebuild drives if needed. Starters alternators water pumps and still save or make 20k on the deal. No Sandy or any damage on the history report and no water lines to suspect it was a Sandy victim. I even removed the switches at the helm and the breaker panel inside to check for corrosion and they all looked fine. Minor scrape on the hull that could've been from docking or hopefully not Sandy.
