TRS weak cases?

I have gone through 2 try's in 15 hours one set of lower gears were brand new, I am pushing big power for a TRS but the last RH went 2 seasons of extremes a use no failures .... So I am wondering now how many failures can these cases take? I seriously think there is a case issue helping mine die so fast now I don't have corrosion but had at least 2 explosions inside that I know of who knows how many before that.... Is there a point where it just won't hold anymore?

I am well state of all the issues with bigger power and TRS but should last longer then 14 hours

Unlimited jd 08-13-2015 10:18 AM

Who's building them?

Full Force 08-13-2015 10:25 AM

My buddy Scott he's been doing them for many years never had issues like we're having all the sudden

phughes69 08-13-2015 02:22 PM

How many times has the thought of moving up to 3A's crossed your mind? From what I hear the transom cut out is larger on the SSM 3A's so that is not an issue. I think really the only big issue for us TRS guys is the trans tailstock (other than the cost of the drives and props)

Full Force 08-13-2015 08:58 PM

Oh it's in the plans for future, but gonna be at least 2 seasons away, I had more power in old engines as far as TQ goes, I beat the drives never had issue, until n ow... I wonder if there is crack inside case allowing flex maybe? or just weak? or just bad gears, who knows some live some don't..

Your setup is like putting a 14-71 blower on a 2 bolt main 330 engine, and wondering why the crank snapped.

TRS +650hp+heavy hull+rough water+aggressive driver = broken drives. Lol

ICDEDPPL 08-14-2015 08:47 AM

You`re in denial! 1" prop shaft, nuff said.

redcorvetteman3 08-14-2015 09:28 AM

What is the weakest part of the drive? I can't remember anymore..

Hahah wtf was I thinking? Oh well guess I need more spares!!! I have no idea how the last ones went 2 seasons of abuse

Full Force 08-14-2015 01:23 PM

Lower gears and on a right hand pushes against the carrier the left pushes into the case...

This might sound crazy but could the cases be tweaked and fatigued from failures and hours of running?

Thaysbwhatbi am thinking, or just a set of gears let go that just happens too I guess

Craney 08-14-2015 10:13 PM

What gear oil do you run in them?

Full Force 08-15-2015 06:22 AM

for me it was the lowers vertical shaft,,I'd snap those things like nothing and in turn would window the lower case.

sutphen 30 08-15-2015 07:48 PM

how are the lower gears dying? Can you post a pic.almost sounds like a set up problem but then after that, something could be moving in the case to lose the back lash and bearing preload.

tommymonza 08-16-2015 01:21 AM

Arneson and never look back.

Didn't take it apart yet but it's not setup, my buddy knows these drives been doing them for years never had issues, really thinking its a case issue but could just be bad luck too

Bingo.... we used to do a ton of trs stuff , once a case has seen a blow-up of the lower gears the case gets stretched and the new gears will never last like they did in a new case.. The only real way to make them live is to change the gear sets out before they blow-up and ruin the case..

Unlimited jd 08-17-2015 08:15 AM

Are these new gear sets?

Full Force 08-18-2015 10:15 AM

Yes new gears.

Case had at least 2 other fails I know of so 3 total... Scott and I both think it's case related at this point

Problem is that after Mercury Dropped the TRS line and about 4 years after that, they started to outsource the gear sets to CHINA and the quality of the gears were poor and the specs along with the Rockwell Hardness were not on par with the original Spec'd Merc Gears. So if you have the opportunity to find sets that were sitting on a shelf for 20 years, they are better then the later versions. Just my 2 cents on experience. Sometimes you can find originals, it took me a long time to find a couple sets, I think I got them from Mel Riggs, but that was 10 years ago......the box was dusty then......lol

the ones I had were in very old boxes also, for sure been sitting but no way would I know China or merc they seemed merc to me lol

Wally 08-18-2015 02:55 PM

I'd probably have the case magnaflux texted on the bearing races and/or a liquid penetrant test to see if there's any cracks anywhere...

ICDEDPPL 08-18-2015 08:17 PM

Or maybe just stop driving like an a$$$hole..lol
