Hey guys, well the gimbal ring in my 88 baja 226 sport is shot. Way to much play. Can't be adjusted. Just bought it like 2 years ago and a freak thing happened and a valve stuck so the motor had to be pulled to check everything out. So the marina said that the gimbal ring is dangerously worn. Guessing it's the original from 88 and the last guy who owned it didn't seem to mechanically inclined ( or didn't care). So I was thinking instead of spending $900 on a new ring and bellows and everything about buying a whole new transom assembly for like $2000. I plan on doing some small motor upgrades so I was wondering if I should get a new stock one or move up to the magnum. Any suggestions?

I think $ 900 is a little light on the ring and bellows...probably closer to $ 1100.
The crappy upper swivel shaft is probably rusted and the upper seal and bushing are junk....add another $400
Trim sender wires....more $$$
If you can get a new t/a for $ 2k....do it....you'all also get a new shift cable and gimbal bearing with that.

I agree with JaayTeee, your whole transom assembly is probably ready for a rebuild. Two grand aint bad at all for a complete new assembly. Here's one on ebay that even comes with the trim cylinders! http://www.ebay.com/itm/MERCRUISER-B...-/151885573435

I'm going to be pulling the transom assembly's off my Formula, they have just over 200 hours on them and they are still tight. They will be complete with rams. If you're interested shoot me a PM. The price will be nowhere near $1800.

And shipping on top of most likely not included
I can see what I could sell you one brand new straight from Merc. with full warranty brand new 2016. NO BS games like some will have,
Will need your zip code as well.

Depending the power your adding, perhaps considering the HP version.

Might go with the magnum assembly. Don't plan on doing a lot of performance work. A 3 way valve job, a little bump up on the cam, possibly valve springs and carb and a exhaust and that's pretty much it. Only reason why I wasn't thinking the hp is because of having to buy the trim senders
