Installing larger stud

I'm finishing up my ext steering install that utilizes the 3 rear cover attach points.
I may need to install a larger diameter stud in the driveshaft housing where the rear cover mounts (lower fastener).
Is there sufficient meat in that area to install a 7/16" dia stud?
Would fine or course thread be best when re-tapping the enlarged hole? Seems like course would be better/easier.
I'm hoping I can find the right 3/8"------> 7/16" stud but if not, I need to start working on the backup plan.
