TRS Drive and trans questions

Hi!
I have tried to search to find answers to my questions, but I can't find it.
Hopefully you can help me, I just bought a boat with a TRS drive. And now have some questions regarding it.
The water cooling of the transmission is it absolutely necessary or can I run it with out?, (it´s not connected at the moment) And if I need to hook it up, where do you suggest I do that on a 496 HO? See picture

The dipstick marked with nr1, what is that for? and what oil should I use? (see picture) The dipstick markt 2, is for the trans right, separated from the outdrive, Synthetic ATF oil?

Yes the trans cooler definitely needs to be used. Where does the one line go to that is on it now? Only reason it should be disconnected now is if it was winterized. Check close for where it may have been connected in the cooling system at. If not you can drill and tap a hole in your seawater pump near where the large out hose connects and install a 3/8" hose barb type brass fitting. The other hose coming out of the cooler needs to dump overboard. The number 1 dipstick is your drive lube reservoir where you will use Mercury High Performance gear lube. If changing the drive lube you will need 3 qts. for the drive and a qt. for the reservoir. In the transmission you can use Valvoline Dex/Merc Fluid. Was this boat being used when you bought it?

I have changed the oil in the drive with a pump from the bottom hole. How is the reservoir connected to the drive unit?, the dipstick was dry, but there was oil in the drive unit.
There is oil in the transmition ATF (red).
No it have been on land for 2 years I think, and the previos owner did not know where the hose should connect (makes me worrie a bit.) And I did not se the hoses before after I collected the boat.

I was always told to use Type F it is for constant load. I guess page 15 says Dexron also. Go figure, lol

In my opinion with this boat being new to you and have been sitting out for two years I would recommend you pull off the drive and grease the u-joints and check if it has the greaseable bearing in the tail stock of the transmission. Most likely it does unless it has been changed. This is very important and now would be the time to do it.

Reservoir has a hose running from it down and back through the gimble housing to the bell housing. There is a coupler on the bell which automatically connects with a coupler on the drive when it is installed. Your reservoir probably went empty when the drive was drained. Ad fluid slowly to the reservoir as it will take a while to flow down to the drive. Have the drive in the down position. When the drive is removed the coupler stops the flow of fluid to keep the reservoir from draining.

I have an other question, can I remove the upper drainplug and put the brassfittning in that hole?

Yes! That would be the perfect place. Hopefully your transmission hasn't been damaged if they were running it with out the cooler. That trans was never used in production with that engine. Be kind to it.

I know, I have a spare transmission as well (got it with the boat)
