on time in budget, mr gadgets
sent the upper to mr. gadgets,
straight forward guy, told me the time frame and what was involved.
(CHECK YES FOR NO B.S.)
when i sent the upper to him he gave an estimate i added in a couple hundred for return shipping and misc. in the form of a cashiers check taped to the drive in the box. he could have very easily absorbed that in misc. shop items and do hickey's
instead drive came home today in the time frame i was told it would be done and inside the funds that were advanced.
along with the remainder of the funds in the form of a check in the box (CHECK YES FOR INTEGRITY)
he even repacked the drive in the same crazy jigsaw puzzle of foam sheets and great stuff the way i sent it to him.
some details off the work order.
blueprint and assemble upper w/ proper gear lash and clearances
drill and tap upper case and install fittings for external oil cooler/filter system
install and set up shims for rigid pinion system
steel tower
new style xr top cap and stud kit
steel retainer nut
plus some other misc. items and special attention type stuff that i think the average shop would either overlook, avoid, or just want to screw you on.
bottom line, dick's a nice guy to deal with, he has all my future drive work
now all i have to do is not end up with a bravo eater for an engine

I drove up to Dick's shop (5 hours) and dropped off my upper. Had similar work done to mine as you did.
First rate job and a really cool guy to talk nuts and bolts with.
I too, received my drive back via shipping in the carton you described. Elephants could have done the nasty on the package and it would have survived intact.
Dick is the only guy who will ever touch my drive!
