I have arneson 7 or 1600 drives on it now and there are no parts, at least there are no cv joints or ujoints made. I was thinking to change to Mer #6 drives but I like the idea of the arnesons very much.Tell me is there a noticeable difference in speed and fuel eficiency.I am slipping away from the Arneson light someone pull me back before the #6 takes me and my wallet.

Is there anything wrong with your 1600s? The housings, gears and chain will pretty much last forever. The CV joints go along time as long as the oil is changed periodically. Water and rust are usually the biggest worry.

Arneson ASD8, M6, M8
But if you already have Arnesons I would look into upgrading those, dont be scared to make some custom parts! I dont know much about the 1600 But Kvogt does, check out his BADAZZ setup! The Arneson ASD7 is a great drive but not rated for 1000 |

My boat is going out of the usa and there will be no chance to do service on it and there are no parts.I know that maybe there is nothing wrong with them now but later pushing almost 1000 hp maybe something could happen and then the toy will be in the garage for a year or more..? If they were asd8 s I would not think about changing them. Also the boat does not have propellers now and I have to spend 5000 for 2 used ones just to test the drives to see if they are good. :cool-smiley-026: |
Buy whatever you wish but your pissing your $$ away no matter what as the drives that are on the boat are good, even though they are 40 yrs old, they work and all is good.
You have to buy propellers regardless if you stick with these drives or you change to another drive. They all require a propeller so I don't see the point here with propeller cost. The ratio can be determined in far less time than it's taken to write these post over and over. You have to contact someone (I gave you Maryland Offshore's #) and have them perform simple task to determine the ratio. I don't know why you have so little faith in the drives that are good and so much faith in everything else. |
[QUOTE=turbos230;4565517]I can get 2 complete #6 drives with transmissions and the gimble and even propeller for less than 20 k.Used but no problems...For both

Turbo230- have you looked into having your cv/u-joints custom manufactured by a machine shop. I'm sure it won't be cheap but could be more economical than changing out drives. Yes, I mentioned economical and something boat related in same sentence yowsa...
