Need A Coupler

I don't want to beat a dead horse. I searched and can't say I know the answer.
Question is Steel or Aluminum? I have a Bravo and noticed the coupler is bad. I understand alignment. Do I want a aluminum or a steel coupler, which is best? I have read some say that the aluminum is better. I will have a built engine in front of it. Thanks for your thoughts on this.

Ayuh,..... The Spline piece in the center of All of 'em, are Steel,.....

snapmorgan 04-02-2018 04:54 PM

I believe that Merc used the alum coupler up to 400hp and the steel one over 400hp.

powermizer 04-02-2018 04:54 PM

They all are now? Bondo

powermizer 04-02-2018 04:56 PM

I have heard they have different snout lengths.

snapmorgan 04-02-2018 05:01 PM

They make a short aluminum, short steel and a steel one with an extended snout. I see no advantage to the extended one, it has the same amount of spline engagement as the short one and it makes it harder to install the engine if you have cable steering or are short on room.

will the short one still seal on the third o ring. Any chance on part number or what the short one fits? Thanks

A drive guardian is a very nice upgrade if you are making some power

I was looking at the number I came up with 8M0098798. Any idea what thi number is. Maybe superseded?

snapmorgan 04-02-2018 07:04 PM

Maybe, I got this info from Bam's website.

Ok, this is driving me crazy. Mercrusier has so many coupler part numbers. I have no idea what to get. Here is what I am thinking. 8M0098797 steel no snout $832
8M0098798 just know it fits up to 600hp. snout? $562

Any help would be appreciated..........John

Snap had a good idea here if your engine is making north of 600HP.

You ever set one up? have to know what your engine puts out. I have no Idea and don't care. if the boat doesn't run where I want it I change things.LOL

When I looked up the 8M0098797 shows it fits 8M0098797 COUPLER ASSY - Mercury Marine | Crowley Marine. Has no snout. I know that because I have it in hand. Just want to do this right the first time. Thanks!

powermizer 04-13-2018 11:44 AM

I called mercruiser today and David said that the 8M0098798 fits the same engine that Crowley marine shows. Is it now said that we should only use aluminum couplers in performance applications?

BUP 04-13-2018 12:39 PM

yes 98795 is the short snout and aluminum and the reason I posted the link.. Many years ago I talked to maker of these engine couplers. The rubber and press in spline and its material has alot to do with the wot rpms along with steel holds and generates more heat. Aluminum disapates heat faster and better. And of course perfect alignment is needed with proper greasing every year min.

The longer snout is harder to align perfectly. Also the longer snout can generate more heat in higher hp apps.

Thanks for your time and info. I decided to call mercury racing and see if I could get some info from them. Scott there told me that all of their Bravio engines use steel couplers. I decided to go that way. I usually end up learning the hard way. Lol. Thanks again for your help and info on this.

I'm not sure how to interpret your post. I have never set one up. We had one installed last Fall. I have yet to run the boat with it. I've spun a coupler and ruined a few drives over the last four years so we're trying the DriveGuardian out this year. It's not fun when your boat doesn't shift into gear.https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...d0df68ef70.jpg

This is what it looks like. It replaces your coupler.

powermizer 04-13-2018 03:48 PM

Ya I know what your talking about. I think it's a great idea, and will work awesome if set up right.
