Default SCX on 27 Daytona

Does anyone have any first hand recent knowledge of XR to SCX conversion?! Some old threads suggest SCX upper change alone can affect COG and not good. Thanks.

I have been told that the 26 and 27 have the CG too far forward as it is.
I think you will lose a little because of the bigger top gears.
Have you seen the new dual downshaft lower that is the same size as an SC?
I don't know why they didn't make it with a small bullet.
That and why not in a -3 shortie.
What is your prop shaft height?
Do you have a stand off box?

Thanks - have read a bunch of your posts on the topic. I did just catch that new lower today. 10k. Sheesh. But prolly better that than use an SC or XR lower toast that and then damage the SCX upper. I don’t mind if I lose a few mph, concerned about a few threads where the cat (not Daytona) started porpoising and handling poor. The 20 mph losses seem to be limited to the scx -4 surface drive. My 27 was built with 496 and standard Bravo drive. I have since replaced the motor with a quad rotor with about 1000 hp and had the drive upgraded to XR. The prop shaft is set just below the outside the sponson maybe almost even. Thanks for any thoughts.

No extension box. Boat planes and handles great right now when not in shop getting drive rebuilt.

WOW - yours is set up with the drive deep. Mine is at 2 inches above the lowest point on the bottom. ( about 10 inches forward of the transom.)
Are you saying yours is just below the boat AT the transom?
what speed are you seeing with 1000 HP.
I am thinking on changing mine over to burn E85 this winter. NA I should get 1000 HP at 14 to 1 compression on E85.
I have a neutral box on mine.

I’m running a XR its that has that extentsion box. I fun a -2” imco shorty, I’m even with the sponsons. I run a teague Quadrotor, i porpoise at 70-80 on smooth water, give me a bit of chop, and all is good. I just blew the pinion gear out the front at 45 mph on a 13 hour rebuild. Chewed all 3 top gears up and ruined the new clutch. I would have felt better if I was beating it when it broke.

do you have a link to this new drive you speak of?

IMCO's New Dual Down Shaft Lower

I spoke with Fred today at imco - he sort of hesitantly said that they have a few of the new lowers out in use, including a cat, with "good results". No particulars though, and I wonder if its been in use on a cat yet. He said they have none in stock, will likely be February or March before they are made, best to pre-order.

My drive is indeed an inch below the lowest spot on the outside sponsons. Boat planes easily and handles perfect - not a hint of porpoise anywhere. And, my bravo drive has the standard bravo lower shape, no nosecone or sportmaster. I have an open bow (extra weight up front). When engine was getting tuned in by Whipple with the new quadrotor, they apparently got it up to 115 mph. I have ran it 108 myself, with me and two beefy guys sitting in back. Tinkerer, I think you right on the COG - boat seems to love extra weight way in the back.

I've blown two uppers - but BOTH times I caught air (once huge air) and they chucked teeth upon re-entry . They were definitely driving errors on my part. I wonder if an SCX upper would have blown as well.

The SCX upper and the new SCX lower with the conversion (helmet) kit is about 22k by my math. Yikes.

I think part of your problem is blow out.
At that speed with your drive that deep you need a drive with a nose cone.
You should try a -2 IMCO shortie lower.
at 1 inch above that low point I could still get on plane without too much trouble.
as long as I can get on plane I am happy. It takes me about 10 seconds to get up on plane.
I have a consistent speed of 112 with 800+ HP
