How bad did I do?

I'm looking to boost the HP on my 502 and thought it be best to help strengthen the stock bravo 1 as well. I have the Simrek drive shower and just bought the Teague Billet top cap.

In that time, I found a bravo 1 on craigslist at a good price that has Teague decals on it, along with their top cap already installed. It also has the Latham steering bracket installed.

The seller claims this was a back up to a race boat. He bought it as a spare and never installed it. Sold the boat, etc....

Pics I saw looked good, so I drove 2 hours to pick it up. Unit was on it's side in his truck and we just slid it over into mine. Paid him and left.

Got it home and flipped it over to find a decent chunk missing out of the upper housing.

How bad is this?

The orangeish color is not rust. It's some type of grease/corrosion resistance film

Why would someone plug the top 2 cooling holes on both sides of the unit?

To run the drive higher and not suck air. I would be concerned about that chunk missing. Maybe it can be welded up but the seller should have disclosed that. Maybe another 2 hour drive is in your future.

AllDodge 10-11-2020 05:01 PM

I wouldn't use the drive, the top is compromised.
Take the top cap off and have a look. Drain the drive and see what it shows. If drive is empty of lube would be another bad sign

The seller was lying and got away with it. No way that was a actual backup drive

The serial number is there, contact Teague and ask them if they did anything to it and when

That's what I was afraid of. Thanks guys

With the wear on input shaft retainer, looks like been apart many times, I would take drive apart and see what's inside?

bigboat28 10-12-2020 09:54 AM

Sounds like a great seller. I called on that drive too. He said it was built by teague. I then called them and asked them why they would make and write on drive rt hand only.... Long story short, they said they didn't.

CDShack 10-13-2020 01:05 PM

Mine thought.....what in the heck happed to the drive to take a chunk out THERE and is it still bad!

speicher lane 10-13-2020 01:20 PM

It could have been hit when the case was apart as it looks like the piece broke away from the case vs. into it - possibly from trying to get the ring nut off..... the wear from beating on the ring nut looks like someone tried to beat it on/off with a drift rather than using the proper tool that grabs the notches of the nut evenly.

JaayTeee 10-13-2020 04:03 PM

I’ve seen Teague drilll and set screw the case to hold the retainer nut from backing off, it looks like it broken in this area

Unlimited jd 10-13-2020 04:29 PM

When facing the input shaft Teague puts the set screw at 1:00.

Oh, yes, you can see the hole where the set screw was at the edge of the break. Maybe someone didn't know about the set-screw and they beat the crap out of the spanner nut trying to get it loose until the case broke.

AllDodge 10-13-2020 07:05 PM

Didn't know Teague did that, but if they did that to my drive (Put a set screw in) I could hear me doing my Ricky Recardo impression, somebody got some splain to do

xlint89 10-13-2020 07:22 PM

You guys nailed it.

Looks like the housing was drilled and tapped for a set screw. (he mentioned Teague does do this) It does appear as someone tried removing the spanner nut without removing the set screw and cracked the aluminum because of it.

Talked to the seller again today and he is going to meet me for a full refund of my $$.

Bad part is, I got to drive another 4 hour round trip to do so. :(

Gas is cheap. Glad to hear the seller is doing the right thing.

xlint89 10-25-2020 07:51 PM

Got my $$ back today.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Seller spoke to his mechanic who said the chunk missing was fine. The seal is about 1" further inside the housing. offered to buy it from the seller for more than i bought it for. That's prob why he gave my $$ back, but it all worked out in the end I suppose.

My first thought as well.

Baja Rooster 10-25-2020 09:46 PM

I’d pass on a drive that’s been worked on by a blind monkey. That retainer ring tells quite a story before you even get inside the thing.

37Outerlimits 10-26-2020 07:34 PM

Just for curiosity how much you pay for the drive?Bravo shop uses that retainer screw as well. Like someone said above they tried to remove retainer with the screw in.

xlint89 10-26-2020 09:48 PM

$2k for the whole thing.

If it was solid, it would have been a great deal. You cannot find a complete bravo 1 for that price. Then you had the Teague cap and Latham hydraulic steering bracket installed. Don't know what else was actually done to it though? Still had the 1" prop shaft and didn't appear to have a billet bearing carrier that I could tell.
