I'm looking to boost the HP on my 502 and thought it be best to help strengthen the stock bravo 1 as well. I have the Simrek drive shower and just bought the Teague Billet top cap.
In that time, I found a bravo 1 on craigslist at a good price that has Teague decals on it, along with their top cap already installed. It also has the Latham steering bracket installed.
The seller claims this was a back up to a race boat. He bought it as a spare and never installed it. Sold the boat, etc....
Pics I saw looked good, so I drove 2 hours to pick it up. Unit was on it's side in his truck and we just slid it over into mine. Paid him and left.
Got it home and flipped it over to find a decent chunk missing out of the upper housing.
How bad is this?

To run the drive higher and not suck air. I would be concerned about that chunk missing. Maybe it can be welded up but the seller should have disclosed that. Maybe another 2 hour drive is in your future.

I wouldn't use the drive, the top is compromised.
Take the top cap off and have a look. Drain the drive and see what it shows. If drive is empty of lube would be another bad sign
The seller was lying and got away with it. No way that was a actual backup drive
The serial number is there, contact Teague and ask them if they did anything to it and when

Sounds like a great seller. I called on that drive too. He said it was built by teague. I then called them and asked them why they would make and write on drive rt hand only.... Long story short, they said they didn't.

It could have been hit when the case was apart as it looks like the piece broke away from the case vs. into it - possibly from trying to get the ring nut off..... the wear from beating on the ring nut looks like someone tried to beat it on/off with a drift rather than using the proper tool that grabs the notches of the nut evenly.
