Bravo XR gears
 

Anyone ever tried to heat treat new XR gears to make them more durable?I can’t believe they haven’t been sued for manufacturing problems. No reason one tooth on the pinion is pitted and all others look perfect.

Years ago I had an upper gear set cryo treated and shot peened on a single engine 29 scarab with 825 hp.never had an issue. I did not wot out of the hole but would run wide open a lot and pulled off throttles if I came out of the water

From what I understand, most all the drive builders around the country are experiencing trouble getting parts from Mercury, They just can't/wont ship the needed gears, brgs, etc. and because of this a shop really can't stock anything due to the same reason. Can't speak about Imco stuff just don't know that.
Not trying to bring Politics into this but If a rebiulder is in a state that has been or still is "Locked Down" how can they get any production done?
But I agree Cryo will help with longevity!

Cryo and REM treating have been used in many race applications. Relatively inexpensive. I’ve had very good success with them using standard XR gears in a higher HP application. Not going to be ultimate solution but may help

I had George at AADS Cryo my gears when he rebuilt my drive. I'm pushing 700hp through my Bravo and it's held up for 3 years so far. No metal flakes on the magnets. I do have to admit I have a hard time staying off the throttle.

Heres a list of what makes a difference in no specific order. Not in the list is the case itself, I swear they get tweaked after a lot of hours or wasting a set of gears. Seems like they last longer when its a newer, unmolested case without past failures.

Any rebuilder that does a decent job is going to add life but here are some upgrades that seemed to make a difference:
1. cryo gears
2. steel tower
3. bigger/more rigid aftermarket topcap
4. aftermarket bearings
5. 7/16 stud conversion on topcap (I think this helped a lot and cost next to nothing)


Whatever happened to the OSO guy that was going to start manufacturing their own XR gears out of some precious hardened space metal? Like 3 people have said this over the last 10 years but it never pulls through...

Question,,,how do you CRYO a gear.?

I believe they take a bath in liquid nitrogen for a specific amount of time

I had it done years ago, as I recall, 1 set lasted a while, the other chunked out just like they normally do
