Try this,, remove the prop from one drive and run it,,compare it to the drive with the prop on,,see what the difference is,,,the race on the top cover looks worn,,definitely more than 50 hours on it.,,do NOT add any shims on top

Thanks for the response. I had the props on when we first noticed the sound. Is the top race "standard" size/thickness? Maybe I just replace the races...can that hurt anything?

A reputable boat shop took a stethoscope to the drives and pronounced it just standard "lash noise"...especially with the cams in these motors at low idle rpms.

Tropical storms...and maybe gas prices/inflation. :-)
Where are you at on your engines?
My old engines have been recylcled into a 292 SR-1...that should be FAST!
Ps-The marine repair shop owner wanted to buy her from me on the spot.
