Volvo Penta behind a Merc 5.7?

I'm working on a 1987 Chris Craft Scorpion 230 with Alpha 1 outdrive. I have a replacement Merc 5.7 en route. The Alpha transom assy is full of holes and the lower gearcase is cracked. I may have found a Volvo Penta DP including transom and coupler, but the boat was under salt water long enough to grow serious barnacles all over. Questions are A) is it even worth looking at after that immersion, and 2) will it work with my Merc engine? Cutout is not an issue, I'm rebuilding the transom anyway. Thanks for any input!

I almost ordered a new drive today from SEI, but then I picked up a pair of used Alpha 1 drives here on island. A couple nicks in the skegs, and one prop is a little beat up, otherwise solid. They've been stored for a couple years, so tomorrow I'll start tearing down and cleaning up; I figure minimum I'll need to do is replace water pumps and change oil.
