Default Bravo 1 - gears / rebuild

In the process of having the motor rebuilt and figured I'd have some new seals put in the drive since it seemed to have a slight leak. Shop called today and said when looking at the drive, he noticed it had XR gears, but that the teeth had some significant wear. I'm supposed to go out tomorrow or Friday to have a look and I'm sure he'll provide me with some numbers as well. It has an IMCO lower on it at the moment. Drive will be behind a 27 Fountain w/ a single 540.

I plan to sell the boat in June, but don't want to sell a timebomb either to the new owner. What would you all do and what should I expect to pay ballpark? I've found some kits for around $2300 with the XR gears. I would assume to stay with the XR gears? Should I look at a reman, rebuild, new?

Thanks,
Todd

I think it makes sense to go for the rebuild, save all the documents for the new owner.

Are you able to get new XR gears? I thought they weren’t available for a year or so now.

Problem with a reman or any other drive…you have no idea what’s inside. IMO it’s worth piece of mind to just rebuild.

You can always go with X gears instead of XR. I know quite a few people who have changed over from XR to X gears and have had really good luck with them. Way cheaper than the XR's and just save your receipts for documentation to show the next owner if you ever decide to sell.

My drive rebuilder ordered new X/XZ upper gears for my drive in mid November. Still waiting for them. The lower XR gears arrived already.

Thanks for mentioning it! My guy recommended the X gears for my application and fortunately has 20 sets on order so I should have it back together by March.

Wasn’t anticipating another 6k for a rebuild given I’m having the motor rebuilt now as well, but better to catch it now rather than be stranded on the water.
