Arneson Surface Drives ASD10

I wonder if anyone can help me?

I have a powerboat with two ASD10’s. The reservoir on one of them is filling up with emulsified oil. I am told that new bellows were fitted around 2 months ago and having taken her out of the water these do appear to be new.

I believe that there are two seals on the prop shaft, one being a water seal and one being an oil seal.

My question is, can these seals be replaced without removing the casing from the driveshaft and ball?

I’d appreciate any advice/thoughts

Yes, they can but more likely to be the gland packing ring that seals the ball, give me a call sometime and I will run you through the process.

Prop shafts are any easy replace and probably the best place to start. The seals should be in a bronze "block" that rests just inside the housing where the shaft exits. The block should have three threaded holes (metric). You will need three screws to insert to
act as a puller. Somewhere on the outside of thrust tube about 1" from the tail end will be two (i think) set screws that thread thru the thrust tube and rest against the seal block to secure it. Remove prop, remove set screws, insert three screws and tap on them to remove seal block.
Insert two new seals (opposing) and reverese.

As far as the ball socket being the cause, I think you would see some milky mess inside the boot if that were the case. But you can pull the boot back and snug up the retainer ring pretty easy. I would receommend that.

Nice to see a few Arnesons left, I only have baby ones, ASD6 a chain drive and counter rotation gear drive unit, 1.31 and 1.33 if memory serves. Believe it or not, the Arnesons and about 650 hp per side pushed my 30' Cobalt beyond its limit on longitudinal stability, only could turn 4400 RPM before my bravery failed me. Hooking and resulting brown shorts was not acceptable. :hitfan:
