Default Purpose of two holes in upper housing of a SSM II drive

Who can explain to me why a SSM II outdrive has these two holes in the upper housing? They are only on a SSM II drive but not on a TRS.
Current theories are
1: ventalate prop- No because ther is no air passage from the upper to anywhere infront of the prop

2: vent exhaust gasses- No because there is a aluminum plate between the helmet and the drive that blocks any exhaust that could come out of the transom assembly and all the SSM II drives use thru hull exhaust.
3: Drain water from the upper housing -No because the holes are at the top.
