Default Bravo drive cone clutch height differences?

Trying to replace a bravo cone clutch. Bought a new one ( 865344A01 ) and its 1.75" tall where the one I have is 1.85". Trying to figure out if this one replaces the 1.85" I installed it and it does not seem to be grabbing the gears in F or R after I put it together and shifting by hand. Have not mounted it/ tried it with motor running..

Whoya,

Taking a stab at it from recent experience....

I've come to understand that Merc made a change to the gears in question at some point in the past, making them with thicker floors, which would require the cone clutch to be shorter, which would cause the behavior you're experiencing. How old is the drive you are attempting to replace the clutch in? You may be in it for a new set of gears, as well.

Thanks. Brad.

That cone clutch will not work with older gears, either find an older one (good luck) or you have to buy the whole gear set. I went through this issue with both my drives.

Had the same problem.

here is what I did. Hope it will extend the life of my upper gears for 1-2 years until I can rebuild them then. Otherwise will have to bite the bullet.

Not on here much but stumbled onto this thread doing a search.
Call Warner Boats in Costa Mesa, CA. (949)631-2810
The old stock part number is 807375A1 this is the taller clutch you are looking for.
I went down this road back in 2018 and they had five collecting dust…bet ya there are four still collecting dust.
Hope you kept all the parts including the silver springs.
Good Luck!

Yep you need the older clutch. Turns out there are a good number on the Mercury NLA lookup. Try any of the dealers in the attached

Now that I look at it some of those listings are REALLY old.
