Looking at that service manual description, I'm betting the wires are buried in the harness somewhere.
On a side note, not sure if anyone has ever tested this with Smartcraft, but there is a stand alone CAN output fuel sender available now. It plugs into the data network and sends a fuel level via J1939 to nodes on the network.
