Need help on finding the location to scan a mercruiser thunderbolt V 5.7 engine

I have a rinda scanner. I am use to finding the extra plug harness to plug in the scanner
But these motors do not seem to have that

the plug should be close to the ECM, should have a grey cap on it, I've not hooked to a small block before

R U asking to run a diagnostic scan with Diacom for an EFI / MPI engine with a MEFI ECM & T-bolt V ignition or R U trying to scan for engine hours / RPM's (only applicable) for a carburetor app with T-bolt V ignition set up. List year and app of your engine along with what you are trying to achieve here. You did not list your exact app so that's why I am asking. Very hard to know 4 sure to give you the correct answer.

BUP- yes it is a carb. Serial 0L094899. I believe it is a 1998- Just trying to scan for total hours

You have to hook up to the module on the distributor. there is 3 different generations of T-bolt V and there is a knock module piggy backed to it as well on some apps.. And of course the procedure is a tad different between them. Plus you have to hook to a ground... Very hard to tell and type how to do it on my end to hopefully make perfect sense 100%. I will give it shot tomorrow if all possible,.

I had figured that it was a carb app as what you were asking about but never know 100 %. There is no ECM or PCM for any CARB app marine engines. Also the Merc DDT will do the same for reading engine hours of true running time / rpms.

Wonder if somehow I could get you the diacom manual. I would have to pull my out of storage or see if Diacom would send you one. Let me see what I can come up with but I will be out of town most of the week coming up if not the whole week..

Do you have Rinda adapter part # 94020 that connects to MerCruisers Thunderbolt V ignition module? $49.00.

If one works, Inside the Rinda technologies link below on page 54 will show you how to connect the adapter in order to read your engine hours.

Your links work on my end.. That's why I thanked you and again THX. And you are correct to write about it would have been a lot of describing to put into words . I did have the jist about it but no indepth in my reply.

How did you know I write for a marine tech magazine ? Just asking. I do not spell very good but I have two editors from the mag go over my stories before it goes to print. Thank goodness for that.

I also asked about the dot on ign. module back a month ago. I could not get a straight answer and most said they weren't sure. Like I said, years ago it was to match up to which ign. coil to use according to the color of the dot on the module. I did nt give up about asking about either for down the road

I do a lot of lurking here and a bunch of other boating forum sites as well and Mod one of them all under different names. I was a Merc/Volvo tech from 1993-08 before getting out the marine biz do to job related injuries that finally caught up with me. I've seen you mention a few times on here that you write for a marine magazine.

I do have one other unusual ECM question for you to see if you were aware of this or not. The reason I'm asking is because I'm not really aware that this could be done or not even though for some reason I could foresee this being accomplished because you are able to do other things using the throttle handle on different EFI models.

PS, about a month and a half ago, your private message box was to full to accept PM's . Also thanks for asking/staying with the module question. My Merc master tech friend that owns a "service only" shop is not aware of either question but keeping in mind that everyone can't know everything even though someone works with it everyday.;):)
