Speakers without an amp.
I want to install new speakers in my 242. I have 2 round speakers up front that sound really weak. I have 2 6x9s that have their own separate sealed boxes under the back seat. The rears don't work at all and the grills are rusty. I have a relatively new Sony headunit. I would like to replace the speakers with something decent. Every speaker discussion ends up with subs, amps, crossovers, tweeters, etc. I am not a big stereo nut, nor do I want to spend a ton of money. I just want to replace the speakers and run them directly off the headunit. Nothing fancy. I have been told JL audio but they seem pricey. Id like to be around $300-350 for 4 speakers.

for 350 bucks , since you already have a head unit you can still buy somewhat cheap decent system with a cheap amp to get you some power .. 6x9 can be had for 75 bucks 6.5 same .. cheap amp / used maybe 50 bucks some 10 gauge wire ect ,, cheap rca jacks there you go .. wont be greatest but will be pretty ok .. look around a see what can be had for cheap

Does everything run off the amp? I have no idea. I have never done any stereo stuff at all.

Maybe the thread should be stereos for beginners.

Spending a lot of money on JL's or any higher end speaker to run off head unit power is a waste of money.
I would go with something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polk-Audio-6...AAAOSwVupTqJ6d Install them and see what you think. If you want more volume, you can still add an amp later. |

Infinity or JBL are also reasonable. Like griff says run off head unit first and see.
I put a system in and rather hear the motors! Lol |
Seems that you need new speakers regardless. Start with that and go from there.
In my experience, you will appreciate adding an amp over the power coming out of the head unit alone. |
We only use the radio while on the hook relaxing. The boat is loud enough at cruise and my wife would not want the radio louder than the boat to hear it while moving anyways. I know their is better ways to do this. I am just looking to maximize what I have, not build a sound system. Sounds like no matter what I gotta get speakers, so I'll start there.

I didn't want to put an amp in my donzi due to space. I ended up buying the blue infinity speakers with the black chrome grilles 2- 6"x9" 2- 6.5". I had them on an old Sony head unit. It would break up pretty good at about half power. I bought a Jbl gauge pod Bluetooth head unit. It goes all the way up without breaking up. The speakers sound really good with the better head unit. I would go with the infinitys. They are priced well on amazon, and as long as your head unit is decent they will sound good. I also like that the grilled is molded into the speaker so you only need 4 holes for the install

We got my wife a new Infiniti QX50. It has an 11 speaker Bose stereo. It really sounds pretty good. I do realize it probably has amps and subs somewhere. If my boat would sound half as good as her car, I would be satisfied.

I know Im gonna get a bunch of crap for this , but , we use West Marine Pro Series house brand waterproof speakers on our commercial boats. They blast music all day ,get soaped and hosed every evening and hardly ever give up. We run them with H/P head units and they actually sound much better than you would expect ( most West Marine Stores have a test display ). Best thing is , being house brand , walk in and exchange for three years without extended warranty , no questions asked ( I dont even bring a receipt , they just look up my name ) Good Luck!!!

Digital sound processing. Let's just say there has been a lot of time spent making that car system sound right. |
Do you spend enough time in the cabin to warrant replacing them? I'm reasonably skilled in that stuff if you need a hand locally. Ask Jonsey also if you know him.
