Default Do Engines Have Memory

My hours meter total is suspect. A friend thought the engine itself has memory and I could "read" running hours from the engine directly. Anyone know about this?

The 496HO PCM will record all hours and at what rpm.

and it is the ecu-ecm has the memory.. not the engine itself. although if you treat the engine badly enough, it will remember and never forgive you...
