Has anyone used one of these before? Very interesting device. It takes NMEA data and puts it onto the network where you can view it via web browser. Would love to hear any experiences people have had with it.
It seems like it could be used as an alternative to buying a Multifunction Display. Say you hooked up this device as well as a standard network router in your boat. You could then hypothetically use any laptop, phone or tablet to view your NMEA data. I've been considering adding the MEFI to NMEA2K device to my boat so I can read RPM and fuel flow but the issue is that I don't want to spend $2000 on an MFD that has a bunch of functionality that I'll never use anyway. I don't need a graph or sonar that can map the bottom of the lake, just a simple depth gauge. I have several tablets as well as my phone that I could then use to display with instead of the MFD.
Here is kind of what I think I'd like to add to my boat and costs.
iKommunicate - $260
NMEA2K Starter Wiring Kit - $100
Fox Marine MEFI to NMEA2K Kit - $285
NMEA2K capable GPS Antenna - $150
NMEA2k capable transducer - $275
Tablet for viewing data - Already own
Total would come to $1075. With this setup, I should be able to read all engine management data from my single 502 including RPM, Read speed via the GPS as well as use GPS to send data to Navionics map for navigation, Read depth via tranducer and then display everything on a tablet, phone, or laptop or all of them at once.
