Hawk 39
Looking at an old 1983 Excalibur Hawk 39. It has 454/420's. Upholstery original, but not tore up. Cabin is dated, but in good shape and original. Everything works on the boat. It comes with a trailer and a recent survey.
What is a good price to pay for it? Did they come with BW or merc trannies? Any pics of them would be cool. Thanks |
Re: Hawk 39
Boat could be worth as low as $ 20,000 to $ 45,000
Trans could be 71c or 72 c Borg Warner also some had Merc Trans |
Re: Hawk 39
Thanks for narrowing it down. :(
Just kiddin. How can I tell what trannies it has? |
Re: Hawk 39
The trannies should have a plate on them with serial numbers, make would be there too. I dont care what kind of shape it is in, if it runs its worth everybit of 20,000. Where is the boat? I know of a few out there.
I have tons of pictures of them in the link in my signature below. |
Re: Hawk 39
Its in chicago. it runs, its in good shape for an 83, all original interior, looks good, with trailer for 25k. newer 420hp/454's.
|
Re: Hawk 39
I would be all over it for 25k! Trust me it is a lot of boat for the money.
|
Re: Hawk 39
Mild Thunder, There is a 40 Hawk on E-Bay looks nice, paint redone, upgraded power, AC, with trailer. I see the trim tabs are missing in the pictures, would want to know what is the deal is with that. Reserve is meet, bid is at $26,100 (Item # 4563247753)

Re: Hawk 39
I bought the one here. Its a 1982. Is in good original shape. I plan on doing some upgrades this winter.
|
Re: Hawk 39
The one on ebay has been converted to bravo drives. They probably replaced the transom to do that and never put the trim tabs on yet.
|
Re: Hawk 39
The one on ebay looks pretty darn nice for under $30k.
Mild Thunder- lets see your new boat...Congrats! |

Mild Thunder, Looks like you did good with your buy of that boat. It's a Bill Farmer Excalibur Boat, which was two years before Wellcraft bought out Excalibur. Also that boat was priced around $ 55,000.00 in the last year or so. Good luck with your upgrades and enjoy.

Re: Hawk 39
Jons, is that your hawk in the pic? It looks awesome. Send me more pics if you got em. tell me more about these hawks! :D
|
Re: Hawk 39
BTW, whats the diff between a hwk 39 and a hawk 40? Never seen a 39 other than mine.
|
Re: Hawk 39
The ebay boat went for 31,000. If it is as nice as they stated that was a really good deal. Any more pictures of these two boats?

Excalibur Hawk 40, First built late 1981 or 1982, 39 feet 3 or 4 inches long, 9 feet wide, have all been called Hawk 40. All early Hawks had a step pad at transom, in 1984 some had step pad some didn't. Most were built with regular glass but Kevlar was a option at around $ 8,000.00 more. There were at least 5 or 6 Hawks that I saw from 1982 till 1984 that were built with Kevlar, most had Speed Master # 3 drives. All the Chris Craft 39 Stingers are the same hull and deck design. Only they were built with chopper gun fiberglass layup. Not as nice as Excalibur's layup process. Bill Farmer Sarasota Fla. built the Excalibur boats. He and Reggie Fountain worked together in the late 1970s or early 80s with Farmers 32 foot boat, then Reggie built his 33 Executioner. After that never heard any more of them working together. Farmer built a 32, 38,and the 40 Hawk, also some smaller boats, he also built a open center console outboard I think it was 40 Foot with up to three outboards. In the fall of 1982 at Faro Blanco in the Fla. Keys I saw Bill with the first 42 Eagle boat, it had Merlin or Leyman Diesels, smoked like crazy and looked very slow but no doubt was good on fuel. There is some good information on the Hawk 40 on this site from last year. Now you know about as much as I do on the Hawk 40. I will post more on the Black Hawk in the picture later. Also I still have the original price sheet from Excalibur, will scan and post. Good luck with your new Hawk.

Re: Hawk 39
Mines an 82 with no step in the hull or transom. How can I tell if its kevlar?
|
Re: Hawk 39

|
Re: Hawk 39
I have tons of old pictures of these things on film, i will try to scan them. I have some pictures of the center console 40 with trips too. I have a collection going in my webshots link below. Send me more if you have them.

Re: Hawk 39
Mild Thunder, I'am not sure which letter in the hull number tells if it is Kevlar. But I think that was a one owner boat, my son talked to him a few years back when it first went up for sale. Do you have his phone number. I saw his name and home city on this site. He would know for sure. Also is there any cracks on the top deck at the base of windshield both sides. ??

Re: Hawk 39
Yeah, it has some stress cracks on the deck around the winshield. The interior is all original both cabin and cockpit.

Re: Hawk 39
the only crappy thing is the fixed bolsters

The stress cracks around the windshield base only seem to happen to the regular glass boats not the Kevlar. My son and I saw a 40 Hawk at Big Thunder Marine L.O.T.O. It was the roughest looking 40 Hawk I have ever seen, it was yellow and white but it was Kevlar Hull & deck with no stress cracks at all at base. It seems like that boat had a K in hull ID # . Our Black 40 Hawk had those cracks fixed four times and they aways came back. I have a Excalibur Price sheet from June of 1982 that I will scan and post. Jons

Re: Hawk 39
I saw that boat two years ago at Big Thunder. I dont remember it being all that nice then either. Jons where are you located?
|
Re: Hawk 39
I'm in south eastern Michigan by Metro Airport. The Black Hawk 40 I sold, it went to L.O.T.O. I have some items I will e-mail to you on Hawk 40s. Have you ever seen a Blue Hawk 40 with Speed Masters on it in your boating travels.

Re: Hawk 39
The Aero-Marine boat? I have a lot of pictures of these boats from the 80's
|
Re: Hawk 39
Can you guys post some pics? I was thinking of pulling my plexi-glass smoked windshield, and having a shop paint it white for me, to make the boat look a little newer.
|
Re: Hawk 39
my 27' had the same stress cracks you're talking about.
I fixed them last winter and one side cracked again last weekend. does anyone have history on Bill Farmer? I couldn't find much thanx Chris |
Re: Hawk 39
mild thunder- i have a lot of pictures in my signature below. There is an excalibur section. I know the guy that did alot of fabrication for Excalibur and Wellcraft in the 80's. He has the blueprints to build an aluminum faring like mine.

That is not good news, but I had the same deal going on when I bought my hawk last year, 35mph and the starbord engine seemed to give out, (cracked head) , Im sure yours isnt that bad, but I Like all the talk and info your post have gotten started with the 40 and 38 Hawks, Im not sure if mine is a 38 or 40, and Kevlar or not, But the stringers are Solid as hell in the engine compartment if you have NAT on your ID#, means excalibur marine boat, which equals a strong solid hull and stringers. I have the stress cracks you all are talking about as well. They dont bother me as long as my boat doesnt break in half, hehe. I am just getting my new long blocks back this week, and cant wait till I am running again, I know you only got to 35 your first trip,, but Was there any better feeling in the world when that baby laid down and got on a plane. Best five mins of my life before my engine gave out, haha Im addicted,, In the off season I am going to do cosmetics. Thanks Excalibur Owners |

Re: Hawk 39
Fred, everyone on the dock at SOTW that knows my boat was commenting on how clean yours was. Nice!
|
Re: Hawk 39
Thanks ExcaliburHawk40....wish I could have stopped and talked boats awhile.....your looks fantastic, I love the interior....wish I had bigger power to push my tank faster.....Fred
|
Re: Hawk 39
You know, everyone told me it was a waste of time to put power into the boat and that it wouldnt matter how much we did, the boat would respond. If you get a little weight out of these things and throw some power at them they are actually fun. I took a two guys for rides that both have 40 Hawks with 454/400's and they couldnt believe it. They would romp the throttles at 3500rpms and get big grins. They were the ones that said bigger power was worthless!
For the guys that just got new boats, you will love it! |

Re: Hawk 39
I was curious if any one knew exactly how to tell which of the larger excalibur hulls are Kevlar? I have a K as the last letter on my Hull ID #, is this the designation. any info would be appreciated.
Mild, did you work out your engine issue? |
