40' excalibur copy info
www.offshoregroup,net
We are looking at possibly purchaseing a boat that is supposed to be a copy of a 40' excalibur. It is a 1978 40' Performer 4000. It is not a fast 'offshore' boat but rather an express style inboard boat. It only runs about 35 mph, but thats ok I still have a 30' formula with bbc. Anyway does anybody know of this company, or even were to get information on a real 40 excaliber. Any info, pic's,links etc. would be apprieciated. Thanks Herman |

Fred,
Wow, really nice looking boat. Doesn't look anything like the one that i ended up buying though. Yours is an fast offshore, the one i bought is more like an express style deck(tall) with a 24 deg hull. i was told that it as an excaliber copy, the guy could be wrong. i liked it so i bought it anyway. It is still in Texas, untill the end of January, then we will bring it up to Canada. I have some pic's that i will try to post next week maybe someone or you will recognise it. Thanks Herman www.offshoregroup.net |
Where in texas is it?
|
ExcaliberHawk40,
It is at a storage yard in Texas City, that should be pretty close to you, yes? When we looked at the boat the owner said it we made by a company that copied the Wellcraft Excaliber. I could not find anything on the net, from the pictures that the owner had posted it looked like the style of boat that would appease my wife so I went to look at it, I still have my 302 formula. anyway if you go to seaquestmarine.net go into auction boats, it's the first one. There are a few pic's there. maybe you will recognize it? It is a project boat, but we've done worse. I am hoping to have a trailer ready around the end of January. Herman www.offshoregroup.net |

Herman check out this website. www.challengeroffshore.com Look at there 42 scv. The lines of that boat look kind of the same. I do not remember a Excalibur having the lines of your boat but anything is possible.
I believe that the 42 was built in MI and was called a Axiom |
I checked out the site, the hull is very similar to mine. There is a picture of another hull on that site, it has a captian morgan paint scheme, the hull and deck are VERY similar to mine. Thanks for the lead. Any info is welcome. I e-mailed them with some questions lets see what happens.
Thanks Herman |
Herman I do not know how much help they will be. Good luck
Have you gotten it home yet? |
FWK,
No, we do not have it home yet. We are building our own trailer for the boat, and we are short a piece of tubing for one side, the mill that produces that size of tubing is only about 15 min. away but, were not scheduled to run that size for another month after we had started this trailer. They just ran production on that size this week, so we should have our tubing early next week. Then we can finish assembling the frame, blast it,paint, and wire it. I just sent storage money until the end of march.I plan on going down about march 20th give or take a couple days. I went to the axiom site that you referred to and they no longer build boats in Mi. but they sold the hull molds to challenger boats. Those molds look VERY similar to what i have. I am now going to contact axiom and see if I can keep working back wards. I hope that it will lead back to the performer line-somewere. Thanks for the leads. Herman www.offshoregroup.net |

Herman does this look familiar????
|
FWK
Awesome, were did you find that piece of history? The hull is the same as mine. I also seen an ad on boatrader.com for a triple sterndrive flat deck performer but i already purchased the tall deck inboard boat. Nobody seemed to be able to give any tangible leads except you. How do you know this brand? Do you have the paper for this ad or did you pull it off the net? I was told that they only made two sizes of the boat, this ad seems to confirm that. Also that they made them as tall deck and flat deck models, which seems to be accurate. How could I get a copy of that ad? Do you know anything else about the people or company? Thank you for you time and info. Herman www.offshoregroup.net P.S. do you have a name besides fwk? |
HemanThat ad is on the NJPPC web site. www.njppc.com Thbere is a section that Dave Patanude Has put up that is a library of offshore memorobiliaIt was in the ads from the past. If you left click the picture the cmputer will give you the option to save it and thein you can print the picture. i really don't know anything about the performer I knew you were looking and found the ad, sorry. It is fun doing the research.
Oh yews my name is Forrest |
Forrest,
Don't be sorry, you have given me the best leads so far. I searched on the net for days and could not find what you found for me, thank you. I have friends that live in Dellwood,Floissant, and St Charles Mo. but i see that you live clear across the state. We don't go down to often anymore, but used to spend quite a bit of time in that area, uesed to go four wheellin, boating and stuff, it was a blast!! Thanks for your help Herman www.offshoregroup.net |
I live 15 miles south of STL. about 30 iles south of whre your friends live. Glad I could help.
|
Forrest,
I looked up indepence Mo. Across the state. I went on the njppc site very cool Thanks Herman www.offshoregroup.net |
Yep I am Imperial MO
|
Forrest,
I e-mailed to challenger offshore and received a reply from the president of the company. He was very helpful. They still use the same hull design, and have an updated deck that is still a tall deck but has a curved windshield and some other refinements, a very nice looking vessel. He knew quite a bit about the history of the design, apparently so do some other people. The design is not an Excalibur copy, but rather a Don Aronow original. It was designed by Don for one of his other company's, Performer boats. The molds bounced around and are now part of the Challenger line up. Thanks to every one who help me trace this boat! Thank you Herman www.offshoregroup.net |
Your welcome I thought that the boat looked familiar.
|
Forrest,
Just to let you know, we just came back from Texas last Sat. Boy that was a long trip, I'd rather go to Fla. twice a week than go to Texas again, wow!! Anyway the boat is in our yard now, I will post some pic's shortly, Herman I know that it's not an Excalibur, but i received the most help from this forum, just thought you might be interested. |
Glad you made it safe and sound. Good luck with the project. Keep us up to date. We were the other forum for many years so you are welcome here
