Hey Mike, The idea for the self bail is to keep the bilge as clean and dry as possible. All the hatches, engine and cabin have gutters with drains but the self bail is an option that I like. I just don't like rinsing salt water into a engine compartment that is closed up. No matter how hard you try, you will still have salt build up. Here's a pic of the cockpit area showing the gutters on the hatch..... Dave

Couldn't help but notice the similarities. As you can see, "grasshopper" has learned well from his former master:
