If you do not want to or cannot go up a size in the screw, mix up some 2-part epoxy and fill the hole with it and coat the screw threads and run the screw in and tape it down tight until the expoxy sets. Then back the screw out and it should make new threads.

Depending on the size of holes/application, etc. I have coated wooden toothpicks with epoxy and stuck them in small holes, or if you can get to the back side of the hole/s I have made aluminum/stainless plates with machine screw sizes tapped in them that I will epoxy on for things you will be taking of and on more frequently.

they make these squirt tubes of epoxy. work pretty good for shooting epoxy into a hole. wastes a lot, so have all the screws out and ready to shoot it. another way is squirt it in, let it harden and drill a pilot hole.

West system has that six ten adhesive. I have used this before and it worked for me. Easy to use also and you can pick it up at west marine.

drill out the holes to 3/16" or 1/4". Epoxy in a piece of 3/16" or 1/4" dowel. Drill new hole the right size.
Permanent fix until you wear them out again
