Pulled off K plane, got a few layers of glass, now what?
So I decided to pull the pull K planes to blast and re paint them and got a little more than I wanted. Gel and two layers of mat came off with the port side, still need to pull the stbd tab. How do I go about fixing this? Gelcoat is something that I've never dabbled with before.

Hehehe, I sure wish he would hurry up on that book. 
My guess is 1708 then re gel. What I don't know is how the heck to get the depth perfect so that the final gelcoat is flat and perfect with the surrounding area.

Scroll down to picture number 8. Obviously you will only be working on the one side but the principal is still the same. Bevel the damaged area to smooth it out, then use a piece of fabric to cover the entire damaged area and even overlap the existing gel some. Then continue with smaller pieces until you get your desired thickness. Then you just have grind it back and flatboard and check it with a straightedge until it's relatively smooth. You'll grind off all the fabric that covers the existing gel, it works as a good reference to help get the correct repair thickness. Use some 3M filler to fill any pinholes and then spray it with gel, sand again to take the orange peel out and smooth the gel to the same level as the surrounding area and then buff.
