Hello,

I was wondering if paint overspray can be removed from painted gel coat like we can with auto clear coat. My dealer had a shop repair a nip in my paint and now I have three areas that are very rough, feels like sandpaper. One area looks nice but if you touch it’s very rough. The other two areas , one on each side of the boat looks like something dropped from the rubrail down, about two inches wide. It’s hard to see but you can definitely feel it.

My dealer is bringing it back to the shop and he said they are going to buff it out. I’m concerned that may do more damage then good.

Try clay bar first.

Yeah, clay bar is great for overspray removal.

They will probably sand it with 1500 grit and re-buff. It will be fine as long as they don't over sand. Make sure they mask the entire cockpit with plastic and any seadeck or canvas or you will be cleaning the buffing compound for days.

If its just the factory Gel you should be able to just wipe it with some acetone and not hurt anything...if there's paint graphic's then stay away

Thank you for responding. I’m concerned they may take off to much clear coat. The sides look like it’s going to need more then clay, which I tried. I tried to post picks but I can’t get it to work

It should buff off just fine

If it's just paint overspray acetone should take it off. Then make sure to put a coat of wax back on. Worst case, wetsand it with some 1500 or 2000 grit paper, buff, and rewax.
