89 242 SS - stuck fuel gauge
#1
Howdy! I thought at first my dream had come true and I had found a tilt and trim combo that yielded 100% fuel economy, but after a few hours I realized my fuel gauge was stuck on full. Ran it down to about half a tank, filled it again, bounced it around on the trailer and no change. Is the fuel sender unit easily accessible, and if so, any BTDT tips on getting this sucker unfroze?
If it's useful or pertinent, the gauge worked fine until I put it away for the winter with a full tank, indoor storage. There were a couple very warm stretches before I got her out, and when I did I found that the fuel had expanded to the point where it leaked out the vent and made a mess I had to clean up. Not sure if being that full and/or pressure might have something to do with jamming the float at the top of the range, thought I would mention just in case.
Thanks!
Aaron

Had the same issue with the gauge in a 223 several years ago. The gauge is accessible via deck plate in the sole to the rear of the storage compartment. Unscrew/unbolt tank sending unit flange from top of tank. Whole float assembly will come straight up. It's a tube with a float inside, not too complicated. The tube has small holes in it to reduce the slosh effect on the float. Probably just needs to be cleaned up a bit.
Good luck (and remember, no smoking on this job

)Best advice I've had all week!~ Thanks, TB!
The access hatch is in the gear locker in the cockpit floor? Didn't think to look under the carpet, duh - will snap it off and take a peek.
Thanks again,
Aaron
