Have you tried bypassing the starter solenoids?? I though my starter was going till I found there was a primary solenoid on the front of the engine. Replaced it and all was fine.

These are good suggestions. I have enough tools to be dangerous, but I think at this point calling in a professional to troubleshoot the problem is a good idea. I'm hoping for a simple solution (like the starter or starter solenoid or a bad ground or something). The good news is that this happened early in the season and I wasn't far from home port.
