New plan. Bigger Formula
I have found a buyer for my 242LS as it sits. We've agreed to a fair price, hopefully the deal will go through. The alternative of course is a long block 502. With parts/labor/etc. the tab would be $9K.
I'm watching prices on 272s, 292s and 311s. Looks like there are a number of good deals out there...and there will probably be more with the high fuel prices. Of course what I don't want to do is buy a boat with tired engines/drives and a rusty old trailer. Decisions, decisions. I'd like to stay under $30K if possible. A year ago I wouldn't have thought it was possible...but I think perhaps now we are in a buyer's market. I don't have a question really...but if folks spot a deal feel free to point it out. But please no Bayliners! :) |
Re: New plan. Bigger Formula
Here's a 1988 272 with twin (recent) 350 MAG MPIs.
I wonder if that combination would break 60mph? http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listi...oat_id=1536297 |
Re: New plan. Bigger Formula
Mine might work for you.
But NOT if you want the silent thunder box.....:D Am also not going to wholesale it....it's too strong of a package. |
Re: New plan. Bigger Formula
Outlaw,
Yeah that's a nice looking boat. The wife would miss the platform. I'd have to rig up a boom to hoist her out of the water or something. :) Hang in there for the right buyer. After years of buying high and selling low...I'd like to find a steal. Maybe I'll find someone that needs to sell quickly to pay off their loan shark or something. Someone once told me that the difference between buyers and sellers is about $5K. With boats and big dreams it's problably more... Chuck |
Re: New plan. Bigger Formula
A local guy contact me last week wanting to sell his 1988? 272. 350's with about 15 hours since rebuilds and Alpha SS drives (whatever they are). Don't know the guy or the boat but have seen it on the trailer and it looks clean. He claims it's in great condition. I think his bottom dollar is about $25-27K. Let me know if you want more info.

Re: New plan. Bigger Formula
Thanks for the lead...I may follow up with you on it. I need this deal on the 242LS to close. Hopefully early next week.
Must go boating! |
Re: New plan. Bigger Formula
Good luck on your sale and purchase!

Re: New plan. Bigger Formula
Personally I wouldn't buy a boat with twin Alpha's. They are not counter rotating so both props are spinning in the same direction. This causes the boat to hadle poorly.

http://newimages.yachtworld.com/1/5/3/6/2/1536297_7.jpg From that angle it looks like the port drive is counter rotating because it appears that the props are spining outward |
Re: New plan. Bigger Formula
Best I can tell they are counter rotating.

Re: New plan. Bigger Formula
Looks counter rotation to me also.

Re: New plan. Bigger Formula
Chuck, I'm glad you decided to go bigger! I think you will be happier in the long run with the right boat. I chose the 292 because it seemed to be the right size for trailering, launching etc. when I'm by myself. PLUS, at the time, it would fit into the garage! :p
That is a sharp looking boat in the pic. Looks great with the white rubrail update! Good luck! |
Re: New plan. Bigger Formula
Thanks. Hopefully the deal on the 242LS will go through. I just sold my Porsche so that will free up some cash flow for the next purchase :). The car was nice but I didn't drive it much. It's hard to go drive fast in grid lock DC traffic...plus I was always worried about getting a ticket. As far as I know there's no speed limit on the Chesapeake Bay...only limitation is my budget.

Re: New plan. Bigger Formula
I have a guy who seems serious in buying my 292. I'm becoming reluctant to sell it because it drives perfect and I've owned it sooo long that I feel like I know it so well, rather than buying another bigger boat I know nothing about. I also fear that it could take several months to find the right boat and that would stink! I remember it took me a year to find my current 292 after I sold my 242!
As far as the traffic in DC goes, that's one big reason we got outa there! There is nothing like ringing in the New Year in your pool, and then boating on New Year's day! :evilb: |
Re: New plan. Bigger Formula
I agree with Formuladude, counter rotating from the angle in the pic.

I have asked about three people if i would gain any speed going to a counter set-up and was told 1-2 mph gain if that
Car Biz, What are you turning now for speeds? I had an 87 272sr1 with Counter rotating props and the best i saw was 63 on speedo, And we all know what that means prob 59-60 gps. |

Upholstery was nice inside and out, some of which looked like it was recently replaced. I'm sure the owner has a ton of $$$ in the motors, drives, paint and other restoration work. But I think I'd rather find a well maintained original boat.

Re: New plan. Bigger Formula
I've narrowed my search to either a 292 or 311 and it looks I'll need to increase my budget a bit. My wife would prefer an enclosed head rather than a portapot...so I think the idea of a 272 is out.

Re: New plan. Bigger Formula
good 311 to buy, call my buddy and see if it will work for ya.

no other 311 will run that for that kind of money. |
Re: New plan. Bigger Formula
This one went quick for $25K... I'd prefer a 292 if we decide to go with a sportboat over a SS or PC but this seemed like a good deal.
I called the guy today and he seemed disappointed it went so quick...guess he should have asked for a higher price.... http://adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/8/2/84366282.htm YEAR 1989 MAKE FORMULA PRICE $24,900.00 LOCATION WILLIAMSBURG, VA DESCRIPTION 1989 FORMULA 99', 272 SR-1, Twin 454 Bravo 1's, Special Order Palm Beach Colors, new motors and outdrives in Freshwater use only, Includes '03 Nextrail triple axle aluminum trailer, RUNS PERFECT! $24,900.... http://images.traderonline.com/EMedi...0523895602.jpg |
Re: New plan. Bigger Formula
I'm pretty sure a guy I know bought that boat. I saw him Sat on the river and he told me Monday (yesterday) he was going to Williamsburg to look at a 272 that was a little rough. I'll have to keep an eye out for him in the next few weeks......

Wow, Those rpm's are down, should be turning close to 4400-4600, losing a lot of speed there, Either those 350 mags are tired or you would need to prop down to 21's, your not getting into the tourque curve on those 350 mags. |
Re: New plan. Bigger Formula
I think the stock 350 is not enough for a 23p,I say 21 max,I have tried all of them too since between me and a friend I have tons of props sitting around to play with.

The cleavers are no good, blow a hole in the water and to much slip, Def get some 21 mirages, Do you have counter rotating drives? That also helps, And yes, Ebay would be a good place to look or ask around here, There may be some people that have some that will let you try. |
