292 Speeds
Just picked up my 2006 292 w/ 6.2 horizons in it. I feel like she is not performing at top end like I was expecting. Top speed as of now is 66.1 on gps. I have had speed boats for 20 years so it is not a trim issue. I just feel like she is a dog right now. I am running in salt water at sea level with the stock 28 bravo props that came with the boat. What type of speed are others seeing? How much gas, water, etc? I am having a heated discussion with the dealer so please no inflated numbers, thanks.

Re: 292 Speeds
The factory does extensive testing on their boats...maybe call Formula to get the specs on that power package.
Another resource is boattest.com. You have to register for the site with your email address. They have test results for a Formula 292 FASTech Test Power: 2 x 300-hp MerCruiser 350 MAG MPI Sterndrives 5000 70.0 Transmission Bravo One Ratio 1.65:1 Props 28 pitch 4-blades stainless Load 2 pers, 5/8 fuel, no water, no gear Climate 75 deg., 70% humid., wind: 10 knots; seas: 1 foot |
Re: 292 Speeds
Someting does not sound right, should be a 70-72 mph boat....we have sold serveral that run those speeds....talk to your dealer, and as mentioned speak to Formula, they will be more than willing to help...

Re: 292 Speeds
My 292 had 6.2's. My dealer told me to expect 68 mph. Typically, with 2 people and a full tank of gas, I was getting 67-70 mph. The fastest I ever got was 74 mph with 2 people and less than a 1/4 tank of gas.

Re: 292 Speeds
Thank you for your responses. I have my dealer and Formula looking into it, I just seem to be sluggish. Might have to try changing out the props to a different set.

Re: 292 Speeds
I have a 2006 292 with 6.2's (standard cooling, not horizons). 30 hours on the engines and have seen a best of 71.5 mph GPS. Seems to always hit 69-70 no matter what the load or weather. Turning 28 pitch labbed Bravo 4 blades. Performance is on fresh water at about 700 foot elevation. In salt water and at sea level I would expect better performance. What rpm did you see at 66.1 mph?

Re: 292 Speeds
The 02 292 I traded in to Magicfloat last year would run 69/70 on gps consistently with 2 people and half a tank of gas or better, it had 350 mags 1.65 bravos and factory 28 pitch props....And a bimini just to seen Cuda cringe..lol

Re: 292 Speeds
Thanks for the info. I am turning about 4940 rpm's on each side. My fear is somehow it's related to the horizons. Formula put water pick-up scoops on the bottom of my boat, have not seen them on another boat? Any ideas...

Re: 292 Speeds
Should be a little better when the engines break in mine took about 25 hrs to loosen up.Top speed is in the low 70s then

Re: 292 Speeds
My recently purchased 2002 292 with 6.2's is very quick. 72 mph is average with the right trim and conditions it has reached 74 mph. These numbers are on speedo only.Surprisingly, the 6.2's do pull hard from 3,000 to 5,000 rpm.
BTW,Once I learned to keep the boat on plane,I finally am getting the performance out of it! |
