Anyone have over 500hp in a 382 ???
Looking to build motors for my 382. Currently running 500EFI's with 8 psi Prochargers. While it's fast, I don't want the blowers and plan on rebuilds this winter. The article about the 382's in the new Powerboat mag has me concerned.
My plan is to build 540's, keep the EFI intake system, roughly 9.5 to 1 compression and aftermarket heads. This should get me in the 620-640 HP range. Magicfloat claims a new 382 with 600's runs 84 (but that maight be with boxes). The Powerboat article claimed 79.XX. Anyone with 500+ hp willing to provide me with your real world cruise and top speeds? I'd hate to drop this kinda money for just a few MPH. Russ C. |

Re: Anyone have over 500hp in a 382 ???
Russ,
I'm running bone stock 525's with Boxes and have yet to seen 80. I usually have the boat loaded with weekend stuff under the bow and a full tank of gas. I also have the genset which adds some weight.

Where is the silver one with black stripes with quad-whipples?

Re: Anyone have over 500hp in a 382 ???
The actual Spyder boat in all the ads and on the Formula website is on a lift in my boathouse,600's,Stellings,gen and air,84 GPS all day long.Ran it in our Poker Run in late July,5 people, near full fuel,80-81 Gps whenever we needed it. Maybe the California Powerboat guys don't know how to stretch out an Alabama Formula :drink:

Re: Anyone have over 500hp in a 382 ???
Robert,
Do you think the stellings make that big a difference? 1-2, 3-4 MPH? You know what I have.....if I can make 640hp with the new mills any chance I'll see 85? BTW: The current motors should red line about 5,500......At 5,000 rpm's w/ full fuel, water, gear, 5 people we saw 86 GPS!!! |
Re: Anyone have over 500hp in a 382 ???
Oh yeah Robert.....what size props on that 382/ 600 package?
|
Re: Anyone have over 500hp in a 382 ???
29 labbed Maximas, boxes maybe 1-2 mph on a 382,slightly better handling, but not that big a deal. You should see 85 based on the info you gave me on your future engines. But all of this is part science, part art, you never know :p Good luck :drink:

All 382's have more than 500hp in them! :) What's wrong with the ProChargers? |

Prochargers do seem to make alot of power but they are set-up very rich and get lousy fuel economy (approx .8 mpg) Maybe this set up is wrong, but I don't want to pressurize the engines. More CI seems to make the most sense because I feel the need to go into the engines anyway. I figure if I do this right then I'll be able to run 3-4 years (minimum) without opening them back up. |
Re: Anyone have over 500hp in a 382 ???
I'm running 600 Volvo/Innovation's. 540 ci/1:47 drive/26.5" pitch. We cruise at 3600/55 mph to 3900/60 mph. Best top end ever is 78.7, but the boat will run 75 any day. DPX drives are a little "draggy" at higher speeds. No boxes - don't make 'em for those drives. Genny, A/C, water heater, 2 full coolers, etc., etc., etc. 1.0 mpg day after day....

Thanks, Russ C. Boat was set up with the props turning inward when I bought it. Have not tried turning them turning out. Actually like the way it rides turning in. The curve on my cams favors higher rpm. Actually a little weak on low-end planing, but when R's hit 3000 rpm, better hold on! HP peaks @ 5800, but I'm propped @ 5400 with the 28's. Probably a little more top end in it with some custom lab work, but the heavy 382's don't seem to respond very well to standard labbing. |
Re: Anyone have over 500hp in a 382 ???
575's SCI, extension boxes, Bravo XR, sportmaster lowers with 5 blade (29 pitch) Hyromotive props (not labbed). Depending on weather and weight, I've seen 76-80 mph.

t500 ... sounds like you landed youself a nice one... we were looking at the fastechs before settling on the top gun. I look forward to seeing the boat with your upgrades... I had the same concerns for the long trips we make here in So Cal.

I remember you guys picked up a nice looking Gun recently. Even my wife likes the looks of the Top Guns but the cabins just don't suit us as well with 5 people sleeping in it for several days at a time. I'll be posting more info as the builds progress, we'll probably be pulling them out of the boat in about a month. What we end up building in the end is what everyone is going to want to know anyway. |
Re: Anyone have over 500hp in a 382 ???
I hvae a set of Steeling 12" stand off boxes for sale if you want to change your X while doing the engine project. I have a 96 382 w/ Hp 500's for Florida in the winter and 540's, 600 Hp with little B&M's for the river in the summer - 650 Hp shows 84 mph - this is a non step bottom

Mine at 94 won't last long, once the blowers come off and the motors are re-built I'm hoping for 85. |
Re: Anyone have over 500hp in a 382 ???
The gps reads a couple mph lower, it must need to be calibrated or somthing.
I wish it read 94.3 like yours |

I wish it read 94.3 like yours I'm just thrilled I was able to get into a 382 as soon as I did. If it weren't for Magicfloat it would still be 2-3 years away. |
