Changing my 302 to outboards

I have a guy that wants to buy my new blower motors. I was thinking about selling them to him and then putting the drives, transmisions up for sale and changing over to outboards. I would be going with 2 300x's or maybe the new motors that they have on the way. What you guys think?

I remember there was one for sale in NJ few years ago so I know it was tried but don't know how successful it was.

Boomer: I remember that boat and that is the boat that got me thinking. The boat stock weights a little over 7,000 pounds. I am taking out almost 1000 pounds in all the modifications that I am doing. If I was to take out the big blocks, transmisions, drives and so on I would drop another almost 2000 pounds. The new motors would add about 1000 pounds so I would have an end weight of around 5000 pounds.

not too sure but I think inboard engine are WAAAAY better on resale than outboards...at least for me.

I think it would be a dog, and almost impossible to sell.

How is the rest of the boat coming along any new updates? If you but those outboards on a nice bracket, this boat may move right along

Come on Jon you can do it :D

Re: Changing my 302 to outboards

I do not remember what the boat that I used to race weighed but it was close to this with 2.5 efi's and that boat runs in the low 80's so may not be as much of a dog as you would think. Plus I could run it WOT all day long if I wanted to instead of having to back off to let the oil cool yada yada yada.

Would I put it on a bracket.... ya I think that I would have to.

If I'm not mistaken, those 300's cost north of 15k.

Jon, I feel SO bad for you that the only thing to do is to have you use my Cig any time that you want. I will leave a credit card in the cabin so that you can always fill the boat up with fuel on my dime. You have helped me out so much and I think that this is my small way of giving back. You can also feel free to drive my golf cart into the side of my house to alleviate your frustrations as you build your own place.

Re: Changing my 302 to outboards

Some were in that area Cuda. However, the motors that I could sell would get me almost there. Add to that I would not have to buy new outdrives at some point and transmisions. I figure that I should be able to get some very close to new motors for around a break even deal? Just not sure if I loose the cool factor of the blower motors yada yada yada......

Sure would give me a lot of storage space in the engine compartment

"Cool Factor" : Blown Big Blocks or OB's?????

Okay, I give up, what's the answer????...:D

On a serious note, it's one of those deals that if that experiment goes wrong, it's gonna go REAL wrong. Personally, I think it's a bad idea.

But you do make some strong points. Maybe Johno said it best....

Might be cool with triple OB's...like 275 Verado's!

I saw a Sutphen not long ago that was converted to OB's on a bracket, except he went all the way with quad's...4 250 Merc's!

Resale might be an issue, but it doesn't sound like you've been restoring this boat for resale anyway. Make it the way you want and make it run! :drink:

Wow Buggus that is a swell offer. Make sure that it is fueled up and at my dock on Friday. I am going to beat on it like a anvil. You will be proud!!! :p :p :drink: :drink:

"IF" you do this....... I might be interested in the drives and transmissions.

Yeah, I don't remember the last time I saw a guy standing on the dock bragging about all his storage space. :D

On the other hand, I've never seen a boat at the dock with blower motors that didn't have the hatch up to show them off.

Re: Changing my 302 to outboards

I think instead of letting you run his boat on his dime, Kurt should just hook you up with a free pair of Konrads. :D

Jon, Cuda has some good points, but does this boat still float :D If your looking to save some more weight I` stop by and pick up those nice bolsters :D

Before you do anything you should check with Kurt and Paul to make sure the have props you can borrow.
