353 Performance numbers

looking at a 1999 353 with 502mpi's 415hp...what king of numbers can be expected ? are these enuff power to push the boat ?

I'm quite happy with my 496 HO boat.

expect 71-73 mph.

A customer of mine has a 99.....he was told 72, claims his best has been 68. If he went out with low fuel and no gear then 72 might be possible.

that does make sense as the 496's are just a little stronger and the standard X-dimension was raised on the 353 in 2000 I think.

So maybe just a couple slower than a newer 496 boat.

Whats up duke!! I finally found you! Ben keeping an eye out since we met at lake cumberland. Hope all is well.

11 people 6 cases seems a little thin on the beer.

PICS? of your '06?

my '02 has run 73.5 and close to it 72 + or- many times with a full load of fuel and gear on 26's (see 353 prop thread)

It'll run over 70 every day of the week.

Rippem 10-12-2006 02:32 PM

Re: 353 Performance numbers

keep that water tank down to 5-6 gallons always!

A full water tanks seems to negatively effect the boat more than a full fuel tank. No doubt 'cause it effects running angle.

Re: 353 Performance numbers

496HO's 75 GPS in most cases, but always some variation. we've seen 74 and even 76.3 in one case.502's will drop 2-3 mph.

I'm running 28's, only hitting around 4500/4600 RPM's. I'll have to looking at moving to 26's, especially if I can pickup 4mph.
Are your 26's Labbed?

Powerboat says 91 GPS with boxes and the 600's
A friends boss has one with 496's with 3lb prochargers running mid 80's I believe,I also have a friend with one with 502 carbs with 5 psi running 97 so far,Majicfloat knows the boat.
I think the 353 rides and handles great,I was with my buddy on the first 97 trip and the boat was very stable.
We had to run his old 311 very loose to get the 80 it did, felt dangerous compared to a 353!!

No not labbed. See why in other thread.

and no you won't pick up 4 MPH going to 26's but you will pick up 300 RPM and like the boat alot more with those engines!

It's alot like the CMI thread. A couple of reputable dealers have reported (and I believe them) having on at least one occasion apiece seen 75+ mph from this combo...

while in the world of end users (owners) 72-74 seems the absolute best this combo will run.

Formula's own test report of this combo says 73.5 two-way ave., light on fuel, 2 people, salt water, with 28's.

that says alot right there about what we are seeing with more everyday fuel and gear load in FW.

I will scan in and post when I remember where it is.

We'll definitely have to dip it in that Alabama holy water before I drag it home.

I really like the new silver and gold #3 graphics and the other changes for '07.

I have the 353 3.5 lbs boost running 83 mph at 4800 rpm ...I wouldn't trade this boat for anything except maybe a outerlimits ...but dollar for dollar I would put her up against any boat...taking her apart form some piston r&r and minor upgrades to put 5lbs ,big injectors head and cam upgrades..... she runs real strong in big lake erie water

Thanks.

I talked to Dave about your boat, and another 353 later on (the Bayport 496 boat). Super nice guy.

I knew you had some issues with paint or gelcoat at one time then lost track...
glad to hear Formula stepped up and took care of it.

Your boat is "Lucaya" colors right?

I really liked the Gold level "scallop" design, that's what yours was originally right?

Re: 353 Performance numbers

and the one im looking at has extension boxes as well...any ideas why this boat would have them ?

causin trouble 10-14-2006 01:21 PM

Re: 353 Performance numbers

Formula tried extension boxes on the 353 for awhile and as far as I have heard it did not make any huge difference in speed or performance to the step hull ...usually the boxes help with stability and getting a better x dimension from my understanding but the 353 did not respond liked Formula had hoped and for the cost to install and upgrade was not worth the $$$

Magicfloat 10-14-2006 02:00 PM

Re: 353 Performance numbers

The benefit of boxes on a 353 may not be huge, but the difference is definetly there.Every blue motor 353 we have ordered since about 2000 has had them, even tho they are not listed as an option on the website, they are available. Our customers seem to prefer them, that why I order them. It also makes a used 353 seem more desirable, part of that is real results, part of it is the perception. My thoughts are on a high dollar boat that sells for over 250K,another 10K is not that big a deal. 353's without boxes run great, the boxes just add a little more performance and desirability. :drink:

Stellings boxes packaged with 502 EFI's? Something doesn't make sense about that...

99% It didn't come from Formula that way. Repowered or boxes added.

I have never seen or heard of that combo before and have looked into literally hundreds of them in the last 5 years.

I saw a 1999 Infered 353 in NJ in April of '05 with 502 Mag MPI's with boxes and bottom paint! Had low hours, but was beat up pretty good. Wonder if it's the same boat? Marine Max had it on brokerage I think... Let us know how you make out.
