292 Fastech 350 mag vs 6.2L
 

How much difference is there in performance with these two motors? Only 20 hp but whats the difference in torque? Any speed difference? What about gas consumption?

We run into lots of variation in speeds on all 292's regardless of engines,but generally,maybe 5 mph,sometimes more,sometimes less. Not much difference in planing(both are a little sluggish,a little difference in midrange but not much.fuel economy not big difference. Since I believe you are looking for used,if you find a nice boat at a price you like,don't let the 350/6.2 be that big a factor,condition and price are more important. Just my 2 cents.

So what are the 350 boats running, about 66-67 mph? Thanks Robert.

I would say, or at least I hope, you'll see a little more in resale value with the 6.2's. Probably nothing earth shattering though

App. 5 MPH is more than I expected. I have heard app. 2 MPH difference between the 350/6.2.
I guess they use the same size prop ? Bravo One 28" ?
I have heard around 68-70 MPH with the 350's, and 70-72 MPH with the 6.2's. Is that not correct ?

I run Scorpion engines with Bravo One 28" props and it is very easy to get the 292 on plane. Don't have to use tabs at all. Just keep the drives trimmed in. But my boat is bottom painted so my top speed is suffering because of that. Funny thing is I don't know what my top speed is because I have no GPS installed yet. Only the happy speedo.

Yeah I was expecting around a 2 mph difference too.

Formula says 3 mph and in many cases that is about right. We have seen 350's vary from 65-68,but occasionally get a 64,6.2's we see 70-71 . For some reason the 6.2's are more consistent,350's seem to vary more,don't know the reason. I keep wanting to take the time to do more prop testing,I think prop selection is holding the 292 back a bit,but it's tough to find the time. I really believe Maximas are the ticket,but Merc doesn't agree. At some point I will test them,but for now the 292 is neat boat with either engine,only comments I get is that it needs a little more acceleration.

I was kind of thinking the same thing on the props. Seems like I read a few posts were guys were getting pretty high slip #'s with the Bravo Ones. Be interesting to see what a 5 blade would do.

I would be very interested to hear what you find if you do get time to do some prop testing.
I am also wondering about Hydromotive props whether they would be better on the 292.

One thing we have found thru testing is that stock Bravo 1's work much better than labbed props on some boats. The slip is much greater,on labs,on 292 and 271. Lab props have their place of course,but they are overrated,and even a negative,on certain boats.
