New Taco Rub Rail
3 Attachment(s)
Pulled the factory black rub rail off and replaced it with Taco's 2 piece Rigid Base and Vinyl insert. Very time consuming but worth it.

Thanks dg,
It was a one-owner boat w/ 242 hours when I purchased her in 2004. But it's like every boat....a work in progress! This was my last undertaking in March 2006. |
Thats a plan for my 357. Where did you get the rub rail?

Link: http://www.iboats.com/1_Frosty_White...view_id.272015 Don't forget to buy the splice cap too! http://www.tacomarine.com/item--4-x-...-F90-9614.html P/N F90-9614WHC |
Very cool. Looks good in the pics for sure!
So that's about $5/ft for the rail + insert before S&H. Do they really get you for $115 freight? Once you add up the rail and insert + S&H, I wonder how it would compare with the OEM White/Stainless from Formula? Somebody here did that...haven't been able to find the thread...but didn't share costs... |

Last I heard, Taco supplies Formula's Rub Rail and has since 1996.
I did poke around on Taco's site at the stainless stuff. I guess the shape/dimensions are a little different than what you used. I also learned Taco's HQ is right here in south Florida...gotta find a "friendly" local distributor...:evilb: |
Thanks for the link.

Anyone interested in going in on a 200' roll, should do 2 boats with a little left over.
|
nice job, it cleans it real nice.

I figured White rub rail would update the look of my older bird! also, I believe Formula changed from Black to White in 95 or 96? |
How was your rail attached to the ST platform? Mine's done with rivets instead of screws like the rest of the boat.

Drill em' out...seal em' with 5200 and drill new holes since Taco's rub rail comes pre-drilled (8" on center) anyway! |

Hey guys, I just got done doing this rub rail replacement and I would recommend to get some samples of the different profiles and colors you think you may want for your boat. Take a piece of your rub rail off and then put the sample up to the boat and see if it's going to cover where the old one was. This is not the easies job to do and very time consuming but worth ever minute when it's done. I did use the Taco's rub rail that I believe measured 1& 15/16 in height. Take your time and I'am sure it will turn out real nice. Sorry I don't have any pictures but I wish I had. Changing the rub rail is a big improvement to these old birds. Propwash.

Did the old rub rail unscrew from the screws on the outside? I was once told you had to remove the interior upholstery! |
Yes the old rub rail screws on the outside of the rub rail removed the inter rub rail on my boat. At this point I then tighten the thru bolts that hold the boat together before installing the new rail. Propwash

nice update over the black !!
the only problem with the white insert is that it's hard to keep clean. it seams to be very porous and sucks up dirt....at least mine does. i wonder if you can seal it with something?? |
hold on a second i'm confused! does the original black rubrail not through bolt? are you saying there are bolts behind the rubrail that attach the two halves of the hull? please advise i am wanting to do this very bad to my 88 311
|
the rub rail is just screwed to the boat. no thru bolts. the thru bolts are behind the rubrail and hold the boat together while whatever adhesive they use to bond the two halves cures. I took my old rub rail off, filled the holes with some fuzor as the new rail and the old rail holes will not line up, and am getting ready to apply the new style rub rail from formula. white rail with stainless insert. on a 91 292 btw

Is it available somewhere? Please help! Thanks! |
sounds like somebody has started a major rub rail revolution. thanks for the info on the rub rail attachment, i'm definitely going through with this now. did a little searching on taco's website and i'm not sure which vinyl to get. according to their website part #'s with whc are frosty white??? but where is the info on the s.s. if i would want to go that route. sabercatt maybe you can help here with part #'s thanks
|
Ok, I went back thru. my rub rail stuff and it looks like I used Taco rail v21-9679whc20d. The whc is for frost white 20d is for 20 foot rail. Also the stainless insert is a 3/4 hollow back no. s11-4511. This can be bought at different lengths as well. I would not jump to order this same rail with out ordering a SAMPLE FIRST to check against your boat. The rail I pulled off my boat I believed was not the original rail but very close to what Formula used back then. I hope this help those interested in this update. Propwash:boat::

Pre 1990 Formula boat owners should use Frosty white (WHC) to match.
1990 to present should use Artic white(WHA). |

Thought I should share a picture of the new Taco rubrail!
I found a dealer that could ship the rubrail in full lengths with airfreight to sweden. It wasn´t cheap but worth every $$$!:cool-smiley-011: |
