FORMULA JUST POSTED IT'S NEW SITE.
1- THE SS310 IS STILL UNDERPOWERED WITH 6.2'S???? 2- AND THE PRICES ARE OVERPOWERING, WHOA?!! A BAJA DEALER QUOTED A FULLY DRESSED 31' WITH ARCH, A/C, ALL THE WHISTLES AND BELLS AND TWIN 496HO'S WITH A TRAILER FOR LESS THAN AN SS310 COMPARABLY DRESSED WITH 6.2's WITH NO TRAILER. HEELLLLOOOOO. I FEAR THAT I'M OUT OF ANY THING NEW FROM FORMULA. AND WHY CONSIDER A USED FORMULA WHEN A NEW COMPARABLE BAJA WITH MUCH MORE POWER IS MORE AFFORDABLE. I DUNNO.... ACTUALLY, I DO KNOW. |
Formula is an expensive boat, but you get what you pay for. Dealers will cut some percentage off the retail prices. Look at resale value of comparable boats a few years old. Personally, I wouldn't consider owning a Baja.
|
I agree with RedDog....First off you get what you pay for. Re-sale is a good indicator of quality. What will it get you back in 5 years? I personally would not pay the $$$ for a new boat, but would purchase ANY Formula that is 2-5 years old. Let someone else be the burden of depreciation!!

True and somehow I don't feel burdened. :D |
The more I poke around in my Formula, the happier I am that I got a great deal. When you look at details like crimped, soldered, heatshrink-wrapped wire connections, fully-bonded electrical systems, fully-backed deck hardware, and top-quality hardware and accessories, you realize that you bought something very different from a Baja (or Four Winns...)
You can by a Yugo for a lot less than a Lexus, too. All caps is considered SHOUTING. |

C Spray, thanks for the comment having to do with shouting. Critique accepted.
As to all others and their thoughts, in my heart, I know you're correct. It's just that, to step up to the plate for a quarter million $, or more,... for a toy... causes me some pucker problems. Damn! I'm waffling, here. I know, fish or cut bait. Just a wanna be's trepidation. After all, one of these things costs 2 1/2 times more than a Mercedes S-Class. Zowee! |
You cant compare the quality of the 2 brands.
|
Checked out the website for the 08 models. I've been checking in everyday in anticipation. Not sure what to think about some of the new color schemes (i.e. Silver Series #1) as well as the silver dash on some of the new 08's. I like the Stealth Blue Imron and some of the others Orange and Lime. I can do with out the yellow's. I would prefer they keep the colors simple and classic. Other opinions on the new 08's?

Cripes! That's a lot of paint schemes. Took me several minutes to go through all the 382 options. I like the black and silver combinations, but black is tough to keep looking nice. I think that a lot of the paint schemes pay tribute to earlier years, but with an update look. (See the boat in the background below, and compare it to "Gold 1, 2 or 3 Series Stealth Red" - pretty cool.)
I had heard that they were going to do some schemes more like the "Flagship" packages that hey put on PC's and SS's, but I see that they couldn't bring themselves to go that simple on a go-fast. Oh, well - keeps mine unique! |
Formula gets an "A" for website presentation. I've always felt they do a great job of marketing their boats.
Yea, I agree, some of the color schemes will take me awhile to get use too. One of my favorites was the "High Voltage" paint job and I'm sorry to see it discontinued. Regarding price, yes they are expensive and they'll continue to increase in price. At first glance it appears that the prices went up about 10%. Maybe they'll offer .09% for a 20 year loan.:D |
:) :)

You cannot compare the craftsmanship of a formula to a Baja. My family has been in the boating indusrty for over thirty years and Baja is not even in the running for a close competitor to Formula. I compare Baja to Bayliner. I have a '99 fastech that is in perfect condition and my best friend has a 2000 baja that the interior is rotting out of it from the sewing seams.

I have always admired Formulas, and they truly are built better than almost any other boat in their class-at least for the type of use we get here in Louisiana, Miss, and Ala. I am gearing up to buy a new boat and am torn between the Sunsation midcabin line, and the Formula BR or SS models. My biggest problem w ith the Formulas is the singular drivers seat area---why no seperate seats, or is that an option? Surely I cant be the only one that wants individual seating. I just don't want someone sitting that close to me! Thanks in advance for your reply. Chris |
As a owner of a 330SS roadwarrior I wondered the same thing about the front seat. I suspect they designed that boat for the entertaining aspect of the cockpit and the fact that the off center entry to the cabin whch allows for the additional bench type seating for 2, but not enough for seperate seating for two.
As one that would like to move up to a 370SS I am in real sticker shock. ($30-40k in 1 year/10%) That type of inflation is not being seen since the new construction housing boom from 01-05. Formula does not have to sell me on the quality of the product, but that will have a hard time selling me a new boat if this continues !!! |

And if you ever have any doubts about Formula quality, tour the factory and talk to the employees firsthand. Enormous pride! |

I like the fact that they give you more of an option with the color schemes. At first glance I was like a fat kid in a candy store. I've been waiting for Formula to come out with a color scheme that I truely like and the 08 Stealth Blue is what I have been waiting for. The only problem is that right now I can only afford a 271. I know that it's not going to be my last boat, 353's in the far distant future, so I don't want to get locked in to a long term deal and take the hit on depreciation. Any suggestions, Magic? Anyone?

Not a fan of the Sunrise Graphics, otherwise I would definately consider it. |
T Lark, that was my original point when I started this thread, THE PRICE. Mon Dieu, they are asking a heap for toy to play with on weekends for a few hours. I understand rising costs of everything. But, I also wonder if they may be ahead of the price curve. Just my 0.02. I did find some comfort in MagicFloat's response, though. I'd even ask if he'd elaborate more on price. Done.

Worried about price. Buy used. Mine was 11 years old when I bought it in 2000. Still looks just as good and after a repower 4 years ago , runs better than ever. Formulas don't get older...they get faster:evilb: :evilb:

I would love to find a used 272 like a 1989,90. If anyone knows of a nice, clean, low hour 272 let me know. I've been in love with them for years, can't find one around my area, in NJ. I'm picky about color, teal, black, grey, and white is my dream boat. I'm actually planning on going to look at a 02 271 with 50 hours on a 496 in NY.

I would consider selling mine. except Teal=Royal Blue 2ND OWNER, Fresh Water Boat( never seen salt water) 10 hours on 500 HP motors, 280 hours on hull, Hyd. Steering, 2 covers, trailer, Sound system, Livorsi Gauges, New powder coat on K-Planes....the list goes on! |
mtgbiker, that's a sweet 272. You should hold on to it until at least next spring (when I'm back in the market!) :)

That sounds like the 01 271 in Syracuse NY, which is the exact same boat as mine. I thought that it was weird to find it, considering how close it is to me. It's in Boat Trader.

I purchased my 260SS in Jan '02. It still looks practically brand new, and many express surprise at it being 5 years old. I wrestled with the premium price at the time, but other than Cobalt, there was nothing we saw close in build quality, and the Formula won for the superior lay out.
I agree that the new list prices are a shocker, but if the factory programs are still good as Magic wrote, the out the door price may still represent good value - I sure hope so, because the missus and I have been toying with the idea of a change. We were considering a Fastech (her suggestion), but at the last raft up all the gals in the go-fasts were oohing over the 260's layout and then they started telling my wife stories of being scared sick at high speeds. Back to square one. The moral of the story - if your better half suggests a new boat, buy it within 8 hours.:D |

$70,000.00 price increase on my 400SS 07 to 08 equipped the same... WOW
|
Formula replaced my 400ss from a 07 to a 08 due to shipping damage from the factory.
Theres lots little improvments but the ones most noticable are full wood floors including the stairs as standard equipment for the interior, change in the cabinet that holds a bigger TV lighting, carpeting, switches etc.. |

I am attending the Formula Rendvous this comming weekend at LOTO and I will be seeking some information. I agree, there incentive programs are the best in the business and while I don't like making payments it was hard for me not to take advantage of it. I was told it would take 3 years for me to trade out of my boat and into another boat if I go the Formula route again and use their programs. That was in the winter of 06 and ok with me b/c I plan on keeping this one atleast that long. I wonder how much thats changed now with these increases b/c it gets to a point that whether a rebate or low fixed term the buyer may well be upside down for a while b/c the market cannot keep up with the cost increases ???

Before I bought my 292 I almost bought a 30 Baja Outlaw the Baja was 110 with trailer the 292 was 128 with trailer + some other stuff.Putting the same money down payment is almost 300.00 less a month with there interest rates.Word of caution they are hard to sell for a few years because they are payment wise cheaper when new.But the more I have it the more I like it solid boat and great service both by dealer and company itself.Needed a bottom drawing (blue print) for my lift Formula had it emailed to me within the hour
