I know some have a fixed-mount GPS mounted flush in the dash; I'm not ready for that yet. But I'm trying to decide between a Garmin 276C in a fixed mount on the left side of the dash (previous owner already had a mount there...the holes might even work out to be the same), OR something like a Garmin 440/Northstar 557/Lowrance 5300C mounted...I don't know where?
I know Russ has mentioned he fabricated something to replace the compass, but I don't remember ever seeing pictures. The last thing I want is clutter, or to drill too many holes. All thoughts and ideas are appreciated

or do you mean this....

removed Compass and made a plate out of Starboard to mount the GPS to. Lined up 4 of the holes that the compass was screwed down in and matched those up to the starboard. I made this setup without creating even one additional hole in the boat. I did router the edges of the starboard after spending alot of time making sure it was perfectly round (astetics).

Yeah, that's it! Thanks for posting those, I hadn't seen what you made before now.

Dave remind me, is that the factory dash panel? Our SR-1s don't have any room like that. I have this crazy idea of completely re-designing a multi-level dash that would have room for a flush-mount.

Factory dash panel, the Faastech logo was there. I would redesign the panel on your boat. I did that with my 1993 F-303 SR1 and flushed it into the dash. I have a picture of it at home, but won't be back there until the 13th. I am leaving this morning for Toronto. If you need help with the powder coating or laser ingraving of the logo's let me know! "I got a Guy".

Go big or go home. 382 Fastech. I have since replaced this tiny 10" unit with the new Garmin 4212 (video capable):
