88 242ls Help!!!

1 Attachment(s)
Hey all,

I am the proud owner of a 1988 242 LS which I have spent the summer painting the bilge Awlgrip White and the 454 bored .60 over and painted red with black accents.
I am now to the wiring part and here is my problem. I have dual batteries and a switch. I am assuming the two leads from the switch 1 and 2 positions go to each battery and the third lead goes to the starter? I am also confused because on the starboard bulkhead there is a piece of black lexan which has two studs above the barttery and I have no clue with this is for either. Oh the the grounds from the battaries go to the block?

Thanks for the help formula owners.

Jed, You are right 1 and 2 go to each battery the third often marked common goes to starter. The two studs were probably for a place to charge or jump the batteries if they died and kept you from opening the hatch. In that case they would be a positive and negative direct to a battery. Make sure you protect them with some form of cover if you reconnect them.

Thanks guys. Yeah I am good with wiring all the other things just concerned with getting these batteries correct. The studs I remember one being for positive and the other negative but just not sure what they were there for.

Here are some more before and after pictures of the progress.

Hahaha I wish it would even be done for winter, but if I dont figure out this battery thing I am in trouble.

I used to have a Palm Beach 242SS with a 454, but I really don't remember the battery switch connections. But, don't hesitate to call Formula tomorrow and ask for technical support. I'm sure they can fax you a wiring diagram.

Not to tease you , but I think I still have the entire wiring diagram for the 242SS. I wish I knew where I put it...
If I remember, I'll post here. But in the meantime, call Formula. They will help.:cool-smiley-011:

hey how bought that just what I am looking for, go figure, nice job!

kjo43 09-05-2007 10:49 AM

I think they are there just to keep the wiring out of the bottom of the bilge and keep things looking nice. I don't have a pic but I'm almost certian the cables go from my battery to those posts on each side. (I have a set of posts for each battery)

I can take a pic if we get the boat out this weekend. But I'm guessing someone will know or have a pic for you by the end of the day...

I have the black lexan on both sides. Right next to each battery. There's a couple short jumpers to the studs on the lexan from the battery.

Hey Oreokid don'y you wanna move up to a 272 lol

oreokid220 09-05-2007 11:10 PM

I wouldnt mind a 272:) I just love working on them and making them look good and when they run as good as they look Im happy.

So what do you think with these batteries. Use the one stud for the negative and the other stud as the positive for one the batteries and direct wire the bilge pump to that positive battery?

Thanks everyone.

Jed

The lexan/stud assemblies give you a place to attach all the ground and power wires without pulling them to the battery. If you are going to run the battery switch then it should be between the battery and the stud so you can turn the battery off completely. You should run a fused positive directly to the battery from the bilge pump switch for safety when the batteries are turned off.
