**UPDATE**
Pulled the pan on the motor i thought was sick and sure enough. The banging around was the rod. Number 8 cylinder the piston broke at the wristpin. The rod is still connected to the crank and was banging in the cylinder. I think the block is also cracked. I drained a gallon of water out of the pan before oil came out:( Any way i am glad i found it was the motor and not the trans or drive. |

** UPDATE**
Well it has been a long hard winter. I got with the builder yesterday he said two weeks. I am going to have the trannys done next week as well. The bilge is still a sore spot but it is coming along. I have to get the new blower hose, get it painted and finish it up. When it is done it should be a great boat. I will update when the motors get off the dyno. ;) |
good to hear
hey, when you're done with that, you can fix my nitous powered srx snowmobile that I blowed up last weekend !!! I wanted to start on teh boat in April, now I'm wrenching on a snowmoible that I won't ride till next January. Ramb by the way, $4.15 diesel and 11.2 mpg average sucks !!!! $475 to take 4 guys to the great white north and back that and a blowed up sled, and a speeding ticket !!!!. good thing my boating hobby is so much cheaper |

I got a pair of 370's that needed to be freshened up. One had a warped block and the other was SUPPOSEDLY a good running one. after further inspection there was no problem with the block and to "good" one had a broken valve and a burnt piston. ...........oh and all four heads were cracked. .................................... Anyway the blocks are decked, bored and now have .30 Weisco forged pistons tha t are 9.6 to 1. Had the whole assembly balanced and put together. I got two sets of heads from Andy here on the board they are 990's that have been cleaned and milled for straightness. I bought two new AirGap intakes, a Custom cam that is a 228/238 .544.544 and a pair of HP 500 carbs that are going on top. I am hoping for 450-460 RELIABLE HP. we shall see in couple weeks because this is costing a CHIT LOAD OF DOUGH... :( |

Sounds good... those cams are real close to the 420 cams, I am curious to see the dyno numbers, I have a similar combo but have Merlin heads with single plane intakes.
came off the dyno today and made 405hp and 478lbs of tq. 32 degrees of timing and 89 octane. I really do not know why the did not make 450-470 i am confused right now:confused: |
Cam-fuel. winter fuel?????

I would try 750 carbs to start, I know they are good to 500 hp, the HP500 carbs are 800's and may be a tad too big, if nothing else you have a little better engine then a 420HP, .30 over, cam only a tad less kift on exhaust, otherwise they are the same as 420's should have been that easily..
|
carb size or jetting maybe ?
the lake is thawed and we have our fun run schedule gotta be dialed in by May 21, our first run !! Ramb |

I can relate to your ordeal Car Biz. Two years ago I bought a 1990 272 with a pair of 454's. Boat ran fine for about 5-6 hours of run time. Opened the hatch one day while idling and noticed a water leak between the intake and the block. Checked the dipstick and it was loaded with water. Pulled the motor, cracked block. I went the easier way and threw in a 420 crate motor. Last winter I matched the other motor with a complete rebuild. Last summer was pretty much trouble free. 1st year sucked.

is she up and running yet? Give us some details

looking forward to hearing about it since that is my dream boat

cam specs please. Not just advertised lift and duration, but preferably grind number, etc. If you don't know the whole specs, please give the ones you DO know in specifics.
Your torque peak is coming in too early. Cam may be advanced. What centerline is it installed on? What's the air/fuel ratio and BSFC? EGTs? More dyno data please. |

What are you running for jets in the carbs? I tried to run the HP500 850cfm double pumper carbs on engines like yours only with GM Vortec L29 heads with bowl work and larger 2.18 intakes and got the same hp numbers as yours. I changed to 780 hollys with vaccum secondaries and picked up 42hp and got better fuel milage. Also ran a 1" 4 hole spacer between the carb and intake. Ended up with 466hp@5000rpm
