242 SS with singel 454 330 hp how fast?

242 SS vs 242 LS any performance difference?

Consider to buy a 1988 242 SS singel 454 330 hp

low 50's with the 330, no performance differance just depends on how you like the layouts for comfort SS to me is a nicer day boat for hanging out on it more cockpit room

ThirdBird 11-23-2007 08:11 AM

The LS will be a few MPH faster because there is less weight forward. It will pull the bow out just a tad more than the SS will. I like the running attitude of the LS better too, it feels lighter the way it rides.

And Just How Would You Know That???

Monaco20 11-25-2007 06:17 AM

HI

Thanks for the reply. Regarding the is it not possible to adujust this by using the powertrim??

What is the perfect engine for theese boats, 50 - 53 miles
is not very fast actually *S*

88242LS 11-25-2007 09:42 AM

my 242ls ran 57 all the time with the mag, 59.8 once:Dwho knows maybe it did go 60 once but them marks were when I had gps

Monaco20 11-25-2007 10:00 AM

57 - 60 not bad, how many hp is the 454 magnum?

I had a 1987 26 Scarab exel with 350 magnum it went 54
it was 270 hp at that time. The Scarab hull is lighter and faster maybe.

88242LS 11-25-2007 10:43 AM

the 242 is a heavy boat, hp on a mag is 365hp

fastoys 11-25-2007 01:09 PM

Had a 242 than a 292ls. Both great boats but not the fastest.

I got a guy...........

On Time 11-26-2007 01:58 PM

I had an '86 F3LS and an '87 242 LS. Both had the "350 MAG" Alpha One package and the F3LS (21'6") went about 40mph max, and the 242 could barely make 37-38 mph despite several prop changes. Actually I did get over 40 in it with a clever prop as it was sold to me but getting up out of the hole was horrible with that prop.

Monaco20 11-26-2007 03:09 PM

That was not very impressiv Beak...

Though the one I am considering is 454 330 hp

And I am told it goes 53 miles

On Time 11-26-2007 03:28 PM

No, it wasn't, and that's the main reason we sold it. The 242 is greatly underpowered with a small block.

Monaco20 11-26-2007 03:40 PM

Well then it is good that the one I am considering has a big block.

I was infact impressed with the top speed of my old 1987 26scarab exel 54 with a 350 mag even though it took some time to reach it. *S*

masi242 11-26-2007 04:17 PM

Great riding boats. you are correct on the speed 3-4 mph faster for the LS. You will need big power to get it over 60mph.

Monaco20 11-26-2007 05:35 PM

Nice LS Masi242

242ls 53

Ok Thought I jump in, you guys are right 53' top out .. full tank of gas [700lb ] and all our stuff about [300lb ] plus the thunder exhaust = 53 but what a great ride. It has a 454 330 hp bravo 1 with 1.50 gears with a 21 mirage prop, I love this boat runs perfect summer long. :drink:

One friend has a 242LS 454/330 and gets 53/54 another had one with a 502Mag/415 best was 62. He swapped it out for a warmed over HP500/525hp and gets 69.6 GPS. I told him to go to 540cu. The speedo is a little more optimistic:evilb::evilb:

tpenfield 12-01-2007 04:05 PM

I have a 1991 242SS, which is about 600 pounds heavier than the 1988 models. I get 48 mph tops (gps) with the standard 7.4L Merc. Speedo says low 50's.

I think the LS is a bit faster. The fastes combination is a 1988 LS with 454 MAG. It reportedly will hit 60 mph (probably hi 50's on the gps)

Why was the '91 heavier, where did the extra weight come from? I've never heard that before.

thanks_don 12-02-2007 01:08 AM

I can't think of anything different other than the back to back passenger seat and I think the sun pad is smaller. I'm interested too !!??? both are great solid boats. :ernaehrung004:

Tpenfield made it sound as though generically, the '91 models, both SS and LS were heavier than the '88s. If in fact he meant the SS was heavier than the LS, that may be but I don't think there was an appreciable weight difference. Certainly not 600 pounds.

As far as I know, the construction techniques and materials did not change in the 242 from 88 to 91, so I don't think there is any weight difference.

Monaco20 12-02-2007 08:03 AM

Hi regarding weight and messures on Formula, check out
the tread from "Handfulz28" What are the real lengt of our boats. 242LS: 2650, 242SS: 2750

tpenfield 12-02-2007 05:36 PM

In the Formula brochures (see their web site), it lists the dry weight of the 242 at 4150 lbs for the 1987, 88, 89, 90 models. The 1991 and 1992 models are listed at a dry weight of 4750 lbs (+600 lbs).

No specific reason stated, probably added some material to the layup.

Monaco20 12-03-2007 12:27 AM

Hi tpenfield yes so it is, the brochures tells this difference.
And for sure they will not let the wrong lbs be printed
for 4 years and then correct it for 91and 92. But strange
that it is a difference the rest of the spefics are the same.

Well, you're right!! I looked at the past brochures and every model increased in weight in 1991, not just the 242. They either changed layups or revised the published weights.

Intersting. Where's Boilerdaddy when you need him??

88242LS 12-09-2007 09:19 PM

Hey I was searching earlier, I noticed on the same sight the 242ss your looking at is a 242ls, blue looks nice if your interested in weighing options

Monaco20 12-10-2007 03:38 PM

Hi LS *S*

Funny you found that boat it is sold by the same company, it
also looks nice, but the price 36000 usd The price on the
SS is 24500 usd. One of the reasons I will go for the SS

Blue242 04-13-2008 12:02 AM

Hello, I'm a new member, and am curious about the most powerful engine one has ever put into a 242 LS? I have seen some posts with 540's with 535HP, but has anyone ever put in say a 588 with 700HP or a blown 588 with say 900/1000HP? If so, what other mods have been done to the boat (Drives and srivetrain)..

Has anyone run Arnesons on a 242 LS? ASD6 or ASD8...?

masi242 04-13-2008 07:15 AM

All it take is a little money:DI don`t think you want much more than 650hp, but who am I to say:Whatever:

Blue242 04-13-2008 12:07 PM

MASI, thanks. I own a boat, that means it costs $$$. As far as more than 650 HP, why not? Maybe I already have a motor like I mentioned above.... New to this forum does not mean dumb... Just trying to get answers from anyone who has ACTUALLY done something like this, not someone who wishes to do so.

masi242 04-13-2008 05:20 PM

Blue, hope you didn`t take it the wrong way,I do believe this hull can handle the HP you just need a drive that can handle the HP. I think a Konrad drive would be great for this or upgrading to an xrbravo.

Blue242 04-13-2008 07:45 PM

MASI,

I did take it as you were tring to get snotty with me. If you were not, then i apologize. Fair's fair.

I am not worried about the drive. The Konrad needs a new hole, so it could be an XR, or IMCO. However, Arneson makes a Bravo Conversion that would be perfect, so I might do that. (That's why I asked about the ASD6/8's.) And yes, I do have a 588 in the garage waiting to go into my 242LS.

88242LS 04-13-2008 08:01 PM

blue you need to start your own thread with some of the mods your doing alotta of us will be curious to see how it works out, also put up some pics:cool-smiley-027:
